Locally called Edina, Elmina is the earliest contact that the European had with the Gold Coast. The Ft. St. Georges Castle often referred to as the Elmina Castle is the evidence of this claim as it stands as the oldest European building of importance in the entire Sub-Sahara Africa. Upon their arrival in 1471, the Portuguese entered into an agreement with Nana Kwamina Ansah who was the king of Elmina at the time to secure the site of the castle. It was put up eleven years later and ever since that time have had several occupants from the Portuguese to the English. Discover on a guided tour why it remains as the largest slave castle in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
