About this activity
Setting out from the traditional village of Sirigu, which is famous throughout Ghana for its strikingly painted and uniquely constructed adobe homes, we take a short detour through the nearby village of Kazigu to meet with a women’s farming group and tour their admirable reforestation project outside the village. From here, we continue on to Ghana’s northern border with Burkina Faso, where you’ll be swept up in the ancient traditions and cultures of Ghana’s north at Paga Pio’s palace, residence of the chief of Paga and home to enchanting traditional architecture, art, and artifacts. Our next stop is just outside of Paga, where a guided tour of the Pikworo Slave Camp, a scenic and rocky area once used as a transit point for captives headed to the coast, is a fascinating and sobering reminder of the area’s tragic history. On a lighter note, and for our last stop back in Paga, the sacred crocodile ponds are a sight (and photo opportunity) you won’t soon forget! With a young chicken as bait, you can touch—and strike a pose with—any one of the semi-tamed crocodiles resident in the centuries-old pools.
