Stop At: Joods Historisch Museum, Nieuwe Amstelstraat 1, 1011 PL Amsterdam The Netherlands

Travel back to the dark days of World War II on a 2-hour walking tour of Amsterdam, and learn what life was like following the occupation of the Netherlands by the Germans in 1940-1945 and how Anne Frank became an icon of the brutality of suppression. Hear the story about her diary and how it came to be published by her father Otto Frank.

Meet your guide in front of the entrance of the Jewish Historical Museum, 15 minutes before the designated starting time of your tour. Stroll past monuments and buildings still marked by traces of war. Your guide will bring the history to life, giving you a sense of how the city’s citizens behaved during the occupation, and how they moved around in times of horror.

Learn why the Dutch tried to co-exist with the occupying army, and how the Dutch behaved towards the Jews of Amsterdam like Anne Frank. Hear about important events, such as the February Strike and Winter of Hunger.

Visit the Jewish neighborhood, and hear all about the Portuguese synagogue and Jewish Museum, the head office of the Jewish counsel, the dokwerker and the Auschwitz Monument. Discover locations the Dutch resistance offered as secret hiding places to families like the Franks. The tour ends next to the Anne Frank House, however: admission to Anne Frank’s House is not included.

Ideal for fans of European history, the tour also gives an insight into how the Jewish community lived, survived and still thrive in Amsterdam.

Our guide Vince was excellent. He really brought the history and areas alive, and had a number of photographs and stories to share (since many buildings no longer exist). He really made the walking tour worthwhile, while we were immersed in such a tragic part of history. If you are interested in history, in the Jewish story of Amsterdam, and seeing the various areas of importance, take this tour. (We had visited the Anne Frank house earlier in the week, and it added to the overall knowledge.)

The lady that gave the tour was wonderful - her name started with an "M", and she mentioned Monica, but that was not her name, but close, but of course now all I remember! Very good at this, and could answer all our questions.

Tour guide Arthur was very knowledgeable and entertaining. He had pictures on his iPad with him to show the group at each stop. Tour covered a large part of the city. He brought the history of that time period alive in a most interesting way. Highly recommend this tour.

We had a great tour! Daniel was a great guide and he is very knowledgeable about Jewish history in Amsterdam pertaining to WW2. Our tour was almost 3 hours with a lot of walking across the northern part of Amsterdam, but it was worth every moment. Highly recommended for those who are budget conscious and want a through review of the Jewish quarter in Amsterdam!

Our guide Talia was great. Her knowledge of the area and the related history was amazing. This walk covers several kilometres but Talia made sure we stopped in shaded areas while she gave us all the information. Well worth making the time to do this tour.

Well informed guide, Daniel, who gave an excellent overview of the history of the Frank family. Daniel was well educated and well travelled and provided a powerful and detailed account of the occupation of Holland by the Nazi regime and its impact on the country's population.

we really enjoyed the tour. Jonathan, our guide was so friendly and informative. He had such a nice way about him. The stroll across the city where we were told about the history and stories of amsterdam was brilliant in its own way. The Jewish park, war memorial and especially the little gold plaques on the ground were particularly poignant and moving. It was my favourite activity of our 4 day stay.

Booked this thinking this was tickets to house. Turned up to he told this is a walking tour and ends outside house. Nothing to do with Anne Frank's museum. Waste of money .

Our grandparents (great grandparents) hoped to survive the war living in Amsterdam. They were Jews from Cologne. Our fathers fled Europe to new lives in South Africa, US and Canada. We - their children/grandchildren- returned to try to better understand the terrible circumstances that led to the murder of our grandparents in Auschwitz at the hands of the Nazis. The tour was fantastic and provided context and history we didn’t have. Friendly, personable and informative.

Two tour leaders broke up a massive group of about 40 into two groups. Our guide, Serena, was very knowledgeable, personable, and spoke well during the 2 hour + walking tour. We learned a lot about Amsterdam's history prior to the beginning of WW2 and as well as the time it was occupied by the Nazis. There was some referencing of the Frank Family but additional information about the "Stumbling Blocks" project, and how the design of the narrow Dutch houses could be adapted to hide anyone seeking escape from persecution during that time. All in all, a well-rounded walking tour over cobblestones and full of history. One brief stop half-way for toilets and water. Highly recommended!
