Stop At: Dam Square, Amsterdam The Netherlands
We will meet at a bike shop next to the absolute centre of Amsterdam: the Dam square. This is where it all began: on this site the first dam was built in the river Amstel sometime around 1265. The square has a rich history and has always been the site of National remembrances, events, and celebrations such as King’s day. It’s impossible to have been in Amsterdam and not having seen the Dam.

Stop At: Het Scheepvaartmuseum| The National Maritime Museum, Kattenburgerplein 1, 1018 KK Amsterdam The Netherlands
While cycling we will pass the National Maritime Museum. The museum is dedicated to maritime history of the Netherlands, and is housed in a former naval warehouse, which was constructed in 1656. It’s worth a visit for it’s large collection of 17th century maps. Moored outside the museum is a replica of the Amsterdam, an 18th-century ship which sailed between the Netherlands and the East-Indies.

Stop At: AH Haarlemmerdijk, Haarlemmerdijk 1, 1013 JZ Amsterdam, Netherlands
One of the dykes we will cycle along is the Haarlemmerdijk. Built-in the 13th century as a defence against the sea, today it’s a lively and diverse shopping street. We will pass many trendy bars like the small and cosy Harlem, said to serve one of the best nacho’s in town, and novelty shops like Pappa Bubble, where you can make your own candy.

Stop At: Spui, Amsterdam The Netherlands
After we’ve dropped off the bikes we’ll make our way to the Spui for our first tasting. Meaning sluice in Dutch originally there was a sluice here. In 1867 it was filled up and turned into a square. The Spui is jampacked with history. It’s also the location of one of Amsterdam’s oldest bars: café Hoppe, dating from 1670, and traditionally the favourite hang out of journalists and writers

Stop At: Amsterdam Strains, Voetboogstraat 7a, 1012 XK Amsterdam, Netherlands
This street is named after a type of crossbow, because in the 15th century the shooting range of the crossbow archer’s guild was situated here. These days it’s a lively entertainment area with lots of bars and restaurants, especially popular amongst students. We will take you to Amsterdam’s most famous flemish fries shop, or ‘Vlaams friethuis’ that’s been here since 1957. Be prepared for a wait, as the line often streches all the way around the corner...

We’ll be having a herring next to this exuberantly decorated building. originally built in the 1890’s as the Main Post Office. Nowadays it is a shopping centre with a newly opened Food Department. Worth checking out if you’re looking to continue your food tasting feast!

Stop At: De Drie Fleschjes, Gravenstraat 18, 1012 NM Amsterdam The Netherlands
We’ll stop for a liqueur at this bar, or ‘proeflokaal’ as is the old fashioned name. In fact, the oldest ‘proeflokaal’ ,or tasting room, in the city has been serving traditional Duch brandies and jenevers since 1650. With its big oakwooden barrels and a collections of antique jenever bottles you feel like you’ve stepped into the 17th century when you enter this bar!

The beer part of this tour starts off at the Beer Temple, a cool little bar on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal that sells mainly American beers. They have 35 beers on tap and over 200 bottled or canned. They even brew their own beer, under the evocative name Morebeer!

Stop At: Chinatown, Stormsteeg 2A, 1012 BD Amsterdam, Netherlands
During our tour we will be walking through the Chinatown of Amsterdam, the oldest Chinese district of continental Europe! The first chinese people arrived in Amsterdam around 1911. These days there are restaurants and shops from many different Asian countries located in this area, as well as the Buddhist He Hua Temple.

Stop At: Red Light District, Amsterdam The Netherlands
One of the breweries we will visit on this tour is located in the Red Light District of Amsterdam, called “de Wallen”, or “the Walls” in Dutch because during Medieval times this is where the city walls were situated. The area is infamous for its seedy entertainment, and although the city’s government is doing its best to upscale the area, the windows with their typical red lights still attract huge crowds.
