Stop At: Zaanse Schans, Schansend 1, 1509 AW Zaandam The Netherlands
Go and see the Zaanse schans windmills Amsterdam. Located 20 minutes north of Amsterdam, the Zaanse Schans offers a perfectly preserved glimpse into the Dutch industrial past with its windmills and workshops.
Step back in time to the old Dutch world of the Zaanse Schans windmills Amsterdam.
The Zaanse Schans was the first industrial area in the world. It’s the place where the first industrial revolution took place in the 17th century, when the Dutch windmill was perfected here.
Dutch windmills are marvelous machines. They share a lot of technology with old sailing ships. The Zaan area had many shipyards and carpenters copied this technology to the windmills.
A Dutch windmill for example has cloth sails, to catch more wind. If there’s not much wind, the miller just rolls them down. If there’s too much wind, he rolls them up. Just like a sailing ship.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Volendam Haven, Haven 43, 1131 EP Volendam The Netherlands
Volendam is one of the most famous fishing villages in Holland. It's next to a big lake. There's lots of cafes and shops on the dike. A nice place to enjoy life on a sunny afternoon.

Phillip took us on a wonderful trip through the small villages just out of Amsterdam where the big buses can't go and then to the Windmills, where he passed on his knowledge to us as the former Conservation and Operations Manager of the site, his knowledge was based on several years of practical hands on experience and not from a tourist guide book. Phillip was excellent and did everything to make our day an experience to remember.
