Once a buddhist monastry, sigiriya was the royal capital of sri lanka for a few decades in the 5th sentury A.D until Anuradhapura regained its position as the island's economic and cultural centre. It was here that the patricide king kasyapa, after killing his farther, Dhathusena,lived in buildings perched on a rocky pinnacle until his brother, Moggallana, returned from India with a mighty army to destroy him. It was this mighty rock that kasyapa turned into a true fortress in full armour that converted it from a mere freak of nature into a wonder down the ages.
