Stop At: Karahundj (Armenia's Stonehenge), Sisian Armenia
Known as the "Armenian Stonehenge," Zorats Karer or Karahunj is a prehistoric archaeological site near the town of Sisian.
This famous megalithic structure consists of hundreds of vertically arranged two-meter stones or menhirs that are stretched from the south to the north.Until now, the age of this ancient monument is unknown. The opinions of scientists on this issue have differed. Some say that Karaunj was built not later than the 3rd millennium BC, and they also believe that the building was erected in the 4th millennium BC, while others came to the conclusion that the age of the complex is about 7500 years.
The name of the structure is translated as "warrior stones," although its designation was not military at all. In total, four expeditions were undertaken to study these mysterious stones. As a result of the study, scientists came to the conclusion that Karaunj is at least not younger than Stonehenge or the Egyptian pyramids. They concluded that Zorats-Karer is an ancient observatory because the holes in the stones allow us to make fairly accurate calculations and correspond to the position of the stars in the sky.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Khndzoresk Caves and Swinging Bridge, Khndzoresk 3207, Armenia
Kndzoresk is an inspiring place where both Armenians and people from around the world are interested to visit. It’s an amazing place, where you can hike along the bushes, or stroll around the caves where medieval people lived inside those caves in ancient.
According to the folk belief the word “Khndzoresk” comes from the Armenian word Kndzor which is being translated into English “Apple”. As to legend the original name was “Khor Dzor” meaning deep gorge or deep canyon and it is said that it has got its name due to its location.
Kndzoresk is rich in historic monuments. Both the village and the surrounding area include settlement, a grave field of 2nd-1st millennia BC.
St. Hripsime church 1666 (17th century) and the tomb of Mkhitar Sparapet (Armenian national hero who won many victories over the Turks in the 18th century and was killed on his way to Khndzoresk) can also be found nearby.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Tatev Monastery, Tatev Armenia
The jewel of medieval Armenian architecture, Tatev, was constructed in the 9th-13th centuries. In the past, Tatev was difficult to reach, because the winding road had to descend the steep walls of a gorge, and cross a river on the Devil’s Bridge, but now Tatev is easily accessible by the world’s longest reversible cable car.
Silently floating over the surrounding mountains, Tatev Monastery is very impressive. The labyrinths of the narrow passages leading from spacious halls to other premises of unidentified purposes, the outlines of niches showing through the darkness, stone staircases, and arched doorways to nowhere give visitors plenty to explore. Standing on the edge of it takes your breath away - somewhere down below the river flows and crowded velvet green hills stand in silence.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Wings of Tatev, Halidzor Village, Halidzor Armenia
The culmination of the tour is near the Tatev ropeway, where we will have the opportunity to sit on the two-way world’s longest ropeway in the world. We will approach the Tatev Monastery on the ropeway, where we will walk around the buildings full of architectural solutions and flexible Armenian imagination.
