The Gothic Quarter (Catalan: Barri Gòtic IPA: [ˈbari ˈɣɔtik] or El Gòtic, Spanish: Barrio Gótico) is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. It stretches from La Rambla to Via Laietana, and from the Mediterranean seafront to the Ronda de Sant Pere. It is a part of Ciutat Vella district.

The quarter encompasses the oldest parts of the city of Barcelona, and includes the remains of the city's Roman wall and several notable medieval landmarks.[1] Much of the present-day fabric of the quarter, however, dates to the 19th and early 20th centuries.[citation needed] El Call, the medieval Jewish quarter, is located within this area, along with the former Sinagoga Major.[2]

The Barri Gòtic retains a labyrinthine street plan, with many small streets opening out into squares. Most of the quarter is closed to regular traffic although open to service vehicles and taxis.

Antònia, the biggest of the six bells that crown the octagonal belfry of the church of Santa Maria del Pi can be heard ringing out all around Barcelona's Gothic Quarter. We can now take a closer look at the church of Santa Maria, which nestles between the picturesque squares, the Plaça del Pi and Plaça Sant Josep Oriol.

A church stood on this site as long ago as the 5th century but the current basilica of Santa Maria del Pi was built between 1319 and 1391, in the Catalan Gothic style. It comprises a single nave, with side chapels between buttresses. The cross-vaulted ceiling, which is one of the highest in the country, gives a true sense of monumental scale. Four of the stained-glass windows are original and were created by one of the finest stained-glass artists of the Catalan baroque period, Josep Ravella. One of the foremost painters of the day, Antoni Viladomat, also worked on the windows. The large rose window is an exact copy of the 14th-century original and was made by Josep Maria Jujol after the Spanish Civil War. It is one of the largest in Catalonia. Inside the church is a 14th-century Gothic image of the figure of the Virgin of the Pines. The church also has a museum which houses an important collection of gold and silverware and some outstanding medieval funeral escutcheons which are unique to Catalonia.

It is said that a pine forest once stood on this site of Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, and, indeed, a pine tree still stands in front of the church. At the side of the church, the Ave Maria doorway features some Romanesque elements of the previous church. The church of Santa Maria del Pi houses the remains of many members of Barcelona's nobility and the remains of the most Barcelonian of saints, Sant Josep Oriol, who was a priest at this famous church.

The Columbus Monument (Catalan: Monument a Colom, IPA: [munuˈment ə kuˈlom]; Spanish: Monumento a Colón or Mirador de Colón) is a 60 m (197 ft) tall monument to Christopher Columbus at the lower end of La Rambla, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It was constructed for the Exposición Universal de Barcelona (1888) in honor of Columbus' first voyage to the Americas. The monument serves as a reminder that Christopher Columbus reported to Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand V in Barcelona after his first trip to the new continent.

City Hall, also known as the Casa de la Ciutat, stands on one side of the Plaça Sant Jaume, right in the middle of Barcelona's Gothic Quarter and in front of the Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya. The neoclassical façade conceals Gothic gems such as the historic Great Hall, or Saló de Cent, designed by Pere Llobet and built in the 14th century. There is a tourist office on the ground floor of the building.

Ciutat Vella (Catalan pronunciation: [siwˈtad ˈbeʎə], meaning in English "Old City") is a district of Barcelona, numbered District 1. The name means "old city" in Catalan and refers to the oldest neighborhoods in the city of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Ciutat Vella is nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the neighborhood called l'Eixample ("the Extension"). It is considered the centre of the city; the Plaça Catalunya is one of the most popular meeting points in all of Catalonia.

There's nowhere better in Barcelona for fun and relaxation than the Olympic Marina, which attracts locals and visitors alike, adults and youngsters. Water sports, the beaches and countless restaurants serving seafood cuisine are just some of the attractions in this, the most Mediterranean part of Barcelona.

Barcelona's Olympic Marina has become one of the city's most popular leisure areas. Located opposite the Olympic Village, it was built in 1991 during the redevelopment of this area of Barcelona. The marina was designed by the architects Oriol Bohigas, Josep Martorell, David Mackay and Albert Puigdomènech. The city needed a sports marina which would meet exacting standards, and it was the site of the sailing competitions during the 1992 Olympic Games. The marina has 740 berths for yachts and its entrance is visible from anywhere in Barcelona.

The two skyscrapers on either side are the Mapfre Tower and the Hotel Arts, with Frank Gehry's spectacular goldfish sculpture at its base, and nearby, the Gran Casino de Barcelona. Lovers of water sports can go yachting or practise other types of sailing techniques here, and in the summertime, the beaches on either side of the marina – Barceloneta and Nova Icària – are the perfect place for sunbathing or for a cooling dip in the sea.

Port Vell commences at the end of Barcelona's La Rambla, by the Columbus monument, a major city landmark since 1886. At the top of the column, 50 metres above city, a viewing gallery boasts breathtaking views of the sea and the famous boulevard. On one side, the 14th-century medieval shipyards, the Drassanes Reials, provide the opportunity to visit Barcelona's Museu Marítim, and if you head for the waterfront, in the Portal de la Pau, you'll be able to see the historic schooner, the Pailebot Santa Eulàlia, which was built in 1918 and named after Barcelona's co-patron saint. This is the departure point for the traditional pleasure boats, the "Golondrinas", which operate harbour rides around the Port Vell.
