Montserrat Abbey and Caves Private Tour from Barcelona
1 day
Private
About this activity
Start your private 8-hour tour with a pick up from your hotel in Barcelona. Your guide will lead you to fascinating spots throughout the day and inform you of their deep history. Hop in a comfortable minivan and enjoy a scenic ride to your first destination.
The dramatic mountains and scenery surrounding the Monastery of St Maria of Montserrat are just as stunning as the monastery itself. Take in panoramic views of Catalonia and the Pyrenees as you approach it. Founded in 1025, the Monastery of St Maria of Montserrat is one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in all of Spain.
Learn about the history behind La Moreneta, the Black Madonna, patron saint of Catalonia, tucked in the basilica. Listen to the beautiful song of the choir, one of the oldest children’s choirs in Europe. Peruse the museum, explore the Holy Cave and take in the beauty of the architecture, some of the best in Spain.
Next, enjoy the scenic ride to Collbató. Enter an opening in the face of the towering mountain and descend to its interior for a tour of the galleries of the Salnitre Caves, full of stalactites and stalgmites. Listen as your guide describes the geological formations of the mountain and explains the habitat of the region’s first neolithic settlers.
Indulge in a typical Catalan lunch (at your own expense) either in Montserrat Abbey or Collbató. At the end of the tour, relax on the ride back to your Barcelona hotel in the late afternoon.

This tour is very informative and worthwhile taking. Our tour guide Catalina was very nice and knowledgeable.
We highly recommend putting Montserrat Abbey on your Barcelona travel schedule. Our tour guide Monica was totally amazing, a font of knowledge, Barcelonal history, Abbey history, landmark history -- it was like having a tour from a University Professor with a delightful personality. We felt we were friends by the end of the tour. One additional note, the Caves happened to be under repair at the time of our visit, so we were offered other options including a partial refund. We chose the funicular ride instead and that was also an excellent option that we thoroughly enjoyed. This site and tour was well worth the investment of time and funds.
Fantastic tour and Fantastic Guide. The explanations given by the personal guide were exhaustive from the geology of the caves to the turbulent history of the catalans and their Montserrat Abbey. Would definitely recommend it to families with kids who want to experience something different.
