About this activity
Meet your guide in central Barcelona, relax on board a comfortable minivan and take in views of the Catalan countryside on your way to Montserrat, the craggy mountain that rises above the region. Stop in a charming village, famous for cattle raising and cheese making, and visit a beautifully restored medieval farmhouse to sample local cheese and wine. As you savor your tasting, admire views of your backdrop – the north face of Montserrat.
Continue to Santa Cecília, a former Benedictine monastery that is today a mountain shelter and a great example of early Catalan Romanesque architecture. Enjoy a short stop here to learn interesting facts about the history of the region, as how the monks influenced the farming and the gastronomic traditions. As you listen to your guide, sample locally grown treats like almonds, peaches, honey or home-cured meats, depending on the season.
Next, relax on the drive around Montserrat and discover the south face of the mountain, which has a different climate and landscape from the north side, making it ideal for olive trees and vines. Get closer to nature as you leave your minivan and follow your guide through a path between fields of olive trees.
Arrive at a 16th-century farmhouse, originally the property of the Monastery of Montserrat. Visit the farmhouse's old olive mill and the medieval water tanks, and learn about olive oil pressing and the different types of olive oil. Sample some of these, then enjoy a traditional lunch of products grown at the farm (upgrade your experience by traveling on a Sunday, where the menu features typical local Catalan dishes)
After lunch, head to the Penedés, a vibrant wine region known for its production of cava (Catalan sparkling wine). Stop at a local winery, where you will learn how cava is made on a guided tour of the winery's underground cellars and barreling room, and finish with a tasting of four different types of cava and wine.
Then sit comfortably in your minivan and admire views of the landscape on your way back to Barcelona.

Tour guide, Isi, showed my daughter and I, along with a couple from Texas, a fabulous day!!! He was informative and fun! The day included traditional Spanish food with wine in some locations we would not have found on our own. The lunch spot was particularly extra special, full of locals enjoying a beautiful afternoon in the mountains. We visited the monastery in the hillside of Monsterat which was, in my opinion, an architectural wonder with stunning views of the area!!! Highly recommend!!!
This tour was amazing!
I was fortunate enough to Josep as my tour guide and we got a private tour for two in a jaguar. Josep was an amazing tour guide who provided history and laughter. This was one of my favorite tours while we stayed in Barcelona. We had second breakfast at the cutest restaurant and the cuisine was fantastic. The visit to Monserrat was such a breathtaking experience and a spiritual one as well. The lunch prior to the winery visit was a culinary experience that we will never forget. I am still thinking about the codfish salad, paellla, coconut flan and of course the wine. The winery was also a treat because the wine was delicious and there was shipping available back to the US. I would say if you are lucky enough to have a tour with Josep, please make sure you do! If I could give him additional stars, I would.
We had a great day and our guide took us all the way up to Montserrat. Spectacular views! She was very helpful and told a lot of facts. We visited a bio/organic winery but didn't like their wine. Highlight was the lunch at the olive farm which was outstanding and best meal while in Barcelona.
We had a truly memorable day hosted by Joseph. First a lovely second breakfast on the way to Montserrat, where we had just the right amount of time to see the sights. The countryside we travelled through was pretty, and lunch in the foothills of Montserrat at Vinya Nova was exceptional. The final stop was a winery tour and tasting at Pares Balta which was interesting, but a little long on a hot day. For food and wine travellers this is a must do.
