Mont Saint-Michel Day Trip from Bayeux
1 day
Full Day
About this activity
Following a morning pickup from your hotel in Bayeux, meet your guide, hop into your air-conditioned vehicle and begin your 1.5-hour journey south along the Normandy coast to Mont Saint-Michel. Admire panoramic views over the French coastline as the iconic Mont Saint-Michel looms near, and marvel at one of France’s most famous landmarks.
On arrival, follow your guide on a walk through the village to the UNESCO-listed Benedictine abbey. Explore the abbey and its mighty ramparts, and gain insight into Mont Saint-Michel’s ancient history as a monastery, prison and strategic fortification.
Head through the grand entrance and follow your guide through room after room, each seemingly more impressive than the last. Perhaps meet some of the monks who settled in the abbey a few years ago, and hear their Gregorian chants echoing around the cloisters during Mass.
Enjoy free time to visit the museum at your leisure, then set off through the cobblestone streets around the village with your guide. Admire the many granite and timber houses you find and walk along the fortified wall, built during the Hundred Years War, when Mont Saint-Michel first became a fortified castle.
Afterward, enjoy more free time to peruse the shops and relax over lunch in a local café or restaurant (own expense). Don’t forget to find a vantage point and watch the impressive spectacle of the tide coming in and cutting the island off from the mainland.
Depending on the time, you may be able to make one more stop for up to an hour before returning to Bayeux. Perhaps visit Avranches and learn about the birth of Mont Saint-Michel, discover the reason why they call Saint-Lô the Capital of the Ruins. Alternatively, watch skilled copper craftspeople at work in Villedieu-les-Poêles or discover ancient Roman history in Bayeux. Specify in the Special Requirements section, at the time of booking, which place you would prefer.
When it’s time to head back to Bayeaux, hop back aboard your minivan for the return journey to your hotel, where your tour will come to an end.

The weather was poor rainy and windy. But our guide was excellent! That helped a lot. There was so much climbing on old and wet steps. Glad I went.8
One of France's most famous sites, not only in this century but for many years past, with Adrian as our guide, this beautiful mont came alive. Adrian the tour leader was knowledgeable and accessible. He provided an excellent introduction to Mont St. Michel starting with its ecological setting and from there moving into history. He allowed ample time to see and understand this important site. Although one could visit this site on one's own, with Adrian as a guide we learned and saw so much more.
Guide as excellent and very knowledgeable. I appreciated that. Regarding the company, I only give a one star. I had emailed 5 weeks prior to my trip, they responded asking what dates I wanted to go to Cherbough and Caen. I told them what dates I wanted then, I waited, waited, then waited some more. I finally heard from them the day before my scheduled trip. 4 weeks after I had responded with dates. If you don’t have trips fine tell me, but 4 weeks with no communication is unacceptable. I would think twice about booking with them again.
Tour guide Amelie was great. Tour company needs to do better job explaining strenuousness of climb and no lift. Tour was 8 ppl, 5 together, who expected lift. 2 of these 5 couldn't make climb, negatively impacting tour for 3 others not part of their group. Very annoying and took time away from tour. Groups of 5 or more should be required to have own private tour.
Our guide was very informative and gave a great tour. The Abbey is absolutely impressive...The history is amazing.
First, because we were in a tour, we did not wait long to enter the monastery. If we had gone alone, it would have been at least an hour wait. Second, tour guide, Caroline, is a wonderful guide, driver and historian. Driving to Mont Saint-Michel, she gave us an overview of Normandy and it close ties to England. She was able to keep the tour moving, but still gave us time to explore. We slept on the return trip. So when Caroline arrived at Bayeux, we had recharged and were ready to explore Bayeux and have dinner. Definitely worth the visit. Thank you.
Our guide, Adrien, was very informative throughout the entire trip telling us about the countryside then Mont St. Michel. Most of our group was older and he was very considerate about not rushing us up all the stairs. It was a wonderful day.
Our guide, Almondine (?) was amazing. Knowledgeable, friendly, and a wonderful person to spend the day with. I would recommend her without hesitation. Please request her for your tour of Mont St. Michel or the Normandy beaches-she is wonderful
I was in Paris for work for three weeks and really, really wanted to see Mont Saint-Michel. Since I didn't have a car, I decided to take a D-Day tour in Normandy and then spend the night in Bayeux. I was very fortunate to stumble upon this particular Mont Saint-Michel tour after being turned away from several other companies who were already sold out for the only day I had available. This was the only tour I could find that included a guide who would take the group through the abbey the others all just had the guide drop off the group in the village. Without Amandine to explain everything that we saw, this wouldn't have been nearly so great of an experience. I love hearing about medieval life and how cathedrals were built, so the detailed information that Amandine shared with us as she took us through the village and the abbey was such a delight. She may not be the most bubbly of tour guides, but she really seemed to know the history of Mont Saint-Michel. We were given just the right amount of time for lunch and ice cream! before the long drive back to Bayeux. We were thoroughly pleased with this tour and thought it was well worth our time and money. I highly recommend booking this rather than one of the shuttle services if you want to visit the Mont from Bayeux.
This was a fantastic tour. Our guide, Andrien was so friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. We are so glad we took this tour - got so much more out of the experience than if we’d tried to do this on our own. Taking the tour made it very easy and relaxing.
Nice tour and it was informative of the site and the local areas. A good size of the group to enjoy the sight and the drive.
A thoroughly enjoyable day, with an entertaining and interesting guide. Mont Saint-Michel is a fascinating place. At times you feel like you've stepped into a fantasy land. I strongly recommend doing the tour as opposed to making your own way there I learned so much about the Abbey, the island, and the region more broadly.
This was a very cool trip. Kate gave us a five star tour. She is a very nice person! Hope to take another tour with her again one day.
