In the early morning around 5:00am, your driver will pick you up at your desired location. Drive about 4.5 hours, about 350 kilometers away from Beijing in a comfortable and air conditional car. Arrive around 9:30am where you can enjoy some local food in Datong, such as sliced noodles. After the local food lunch, you will visit the Yungang grottoes from 11:00am to 3:00pm. It is an excellent examples of rock-cut architecture, one of the three most famous ancient Buddhist sculptural sites of China and an outstanding example of the Chinese stone carvings from the 5th and 6th centuries. All together, the site is composed of 252 grottoes with more than 51,000 Buddha statues and statuettes.
In 2001, the Yungang Grottoes were made a UNESCO World Heritage Site The Yungang Grottoes is considered by UNESCO as a "masterpiece of early Chinese Buddhist cave art and represent the successful fusion of Buddhist religious symbolic art from south and central Asia with Chinese cultural traditions, starting in the 5th century CE under Imperial auspices." It is classified as a AAAAA scenic area by the China National Tourism Administration. At 3:00pm, your driver will transfer you back to Beijing and arrive at 7:00pm.
