About this activity
We shall explore the medieval history of northern Bulgaria on this one full-day tour. We shall reach Bulgaria within 1 hour drive from Bucharest, cross the border over Danube river on the "Friendship Bridge" and head to the Balkan Mountains and Veliko Tarnovo, the capital of Bulgaria during medieval times. First stop will be at the St Dimitrie Basarabov Monastery, where a small but beautiful monastery sits at the bottom of a cliff with small chapels carved up in the cliff face. Ivanovo Rock Churches, a unique UNESCO World Heritage Site will follow shortly. Now its time for Veliko Turnovo (the City of Tsars) where you can tour inside the Tsarevets fortress from the 12th century. Step back in time on the Samovodene Artisans Street packed with workshops of locals where you can find a coppersmith, silversmith, icon painter and many more. Drive up to Arbanassi Village, an architectural reserve unique in Bulgaria.
