Today it is considered as one of the oldest stone structures built by man, and the first time the Ancient Egyptians would attempt to use limestone. The Bent pyramid The Bent Pyramid was built during the reign of pharaoh Sneferu and it clearly indicates a transition away from the traditional “step” pyramid design. It is also credited with being the first attempt at building a smooth sided pyramid. It is generally accepted that the smooth sides were intended to be a part of the design. The unusual shape of the pyramid on the other hand, is still the subject of much debate.
The Red Pyramid was the first “true” smooth-sided pyramid ever built. Like the Bent Pyramid, the Red Pyramid was also built during the reign of pharaoh Sneferu. Many historians actually believe that pharaoh Sneferu had the pyramid built to serve as his own final resting place, but this has never been proven, even though human remains were recovered from the pyramid.
