Stop At: Bo-kaap, Cape Town Central South Africa
Our first stop will be here for a photo opportunity in this historical Cape Town colourful suburb.Situated at the foot of Signal Hill, on the fringe of the city centre, and formerly known as the Malay Quarter, the Bo-Kaap’s origins date back to the 1760s when numerous “huurhuisjes” (rental houses) were built and leased to slaves. These people were known as Cape Malays, and were brought from Malaysia, Indonesia and the rest of Africa to work in the Cape.
To this day, the houses are a mix of Cape Dutch and Georgian architecture, in distinctive multi-coloured rows on steeply cobbled roads. The choice of colour is said to be attributed to the fact that while on lease, all the houses had to be white. When this rule was eventually lifted, and the slaves were allowed to buy the properties, all the houses were painted bright colours by their owners as an expression of their freedom.
Many of the families in the Bo-Kaap have been living there for generations. Today the Bo-Kaap community is a significant part of our cultural heritage. The oldest building in the Bo-Kaap is in Wale Street and currently houses the Bo-Kaap Museum. This is the best place to discover the real history of the area and to get a glimpse into the life of a typical Malay family.
The first established Muslim mosque in South Africa, the Auwal Mosque, can also be found in the Bo-Kaap.

Since this was our first visit to Cape Town we wanted a comprehensive tour of the area. This is exactly what we got. The whole experience exceeded our expectations. Felix was our guide. He was a very pleasant guy with a wealth of knowledge of the history and topography of the cape. He built in many opportunities for photos. We learned so much from him that day. There were so many favorites about this tour but I think experiencing the penguin colony tops the list. We highly recommend this tour. Once again Viator comes through with flying colors.
It was a nice day. Knowlegable guide. Stopped at many places fir us to exlpore and take pictures. We walked up Kaap Goede Hoop. Sometimes we were just talking in the car. Telling each other interesting things from our countries. NL and UK. We had a wonderful day.
My husband and I had a superb full day tour with just us and our Guide Armon on Friday 9/8/2019. We were picked up at our hotel on time and looked around Bo-Kaap before heading off on the M5. Armon gave us an amazing commentary all day long, explaining the locations and sights we were seeing and the history and stories about them. We saw picturesque scenery as we drove down the coast to Muizenburg, Fish Hoek, Simons Town and onto Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. Climbed up to the Lighthouse using the Flying Dutchman Funicular Railway and gazed on the amazing view. Luckily arrived before the huge crowds (Public Holiday). Next saw the adorable Boulders Beach Penguins, before returning for a delicious lunch at Simons Town. We were in awe of the amazing Chapman's Peak Drive scenery, then we drove back through suburbs including Clifton and Sea Point, full of beautiful waterfront mansion properties. A wonderful day trip for our last day which capped off our memorable South African holiday. Thank you Armon for looking after us so well and giving us a great day! Would recommend this tour to other travellers.
Excellent tour! Danny was knowledgeable, good company, flexible...He gave us the option of adding a winery to our day, which we really enjoyed. A wonderful day.
(1) First about the tour in general. We do travel really a lot, but until now tried getting on bigger organised tours. This was our first experience with a "private tour". We can only say that it was just great. In bigger tours you cannot control neither the stops and their duration nor the information which is being told you. In this private tour you basically decide on everything. We decided to skip downtown and go straight to visit sites outside of Capetown - just fine. The tour had a pre-planned program. We had several stops along the shore with great views. Since we traveled with kids, our goal was to see as many animals as possible, so we visited robes and penguins. We spontaneously decided to visit ostrichеs and feed them. We skipped the walk to the lighthouse (it was cloudy, so anyhow nothing to see), which would not be possible in the big tour, and simply went further to the Cape of Good Hope. On the way back we just asked whether we can also visit a wine tasting - yes, why not...... Just great. Much more adjusted to our needs. (2) The guide, Danny. A wealth of information on history, flora and fauna, science, culture, local habits, just everything. You could talk openly on things you do not know or do not understand in SA. The travel between stops was never boring. At all stops we got nice photos of all 4 of us, since Danny knew nice spots and managed to get us many excellent memories. Many who are used to ask neighbours to make a photo, which is then half-way okay, will value this. He is a good photographer with nice ideas. It seamed that Danny just knew everybody on the tour. We were treated as VIPs everywhere ))) What we valued the most, is the focus of Danny on our wishes and, even after the tour was over, we stayed in contact and got multiple nice hints and suggestions in the following days.
One of the highlights of our time in South Africa. The care and attention we were shown by Alain who handled this tour for us was immeasurably perfect! You cannot go wrong with this tour and with this guide. He was fantastic through and through. Well worth it.
Absolutely phenomenal trip. Seraphin arrived to pick us up early and was professional, knowledgeable and determined to make the tour go well by ensuring we got to all of our options. A great trip, great tour guide and outstanding trip throughout the Western Cape. A true must do. Thank you Seraphin for a great day.
We were picked up by Joseph who arrived 15 minutes early and had a very nice Mercedes to drive around in. We stopped at Seal Island, the Penguins, and the Cape of a Good Hope which was a day well spent. Each of the sites we stopped at took credit card for the admit fee, so there was no need to bring ZAR. Joseph was very polite and knowledgeable and spoke great English and an overall great guide.
Albert presented an outstanding tour of the Cape. He was knowledgeable and interesting. He took good care of us and made sure we had q good time. He also educated us on the history of S. Africa and the peoples. Lunch was delicious and reasonably priced. I would recommend this tour.
Nathan our tour guide made this a wonderful trip. The scenery was spectacular, the food excellent. We completely enjoyed the tour.
This tour is exactly what it means, a full day, about 8 hours. The company that provided us with a guide, Santana and a driver was Kabura Travel and Tours. The tour and times at each location was tailored to our needs. Santana's explanations and historical facts of the areas we drove to and drove by were amazing and there was no question she couldn't answer. Highlights included beaches, boat ride to a rock island of seals, a visit to a penguin colony and the Cape of Good Hope. Upon completion, we asked to be dropped off at the waterfront for dinner. The experience was awesome and gave us the opportunity to see the western cape and it's beauty and great site. I strongly recommend this tour.
This was a great trip and Nathan our guide and driver was wonderful, but it felt like a lot of time in the car. It was a lot to try to see in one day. If you have the time spend two days touring all around the cape. If you dont then take this tour and see it all.
An amazing way to see the different neighborhoods that make up Cape Town. seeing the penguins is, of course, the highlight of this tour but, walking around Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope makes it a fabulous day of outdoors fun.
Our guide Albert was outstanding and made our day!
