About this activity
MARGARITES, ARKADI MONASTERY, RETHYMNON CITY
Margarites: The traditional hamlet is one of Crete’s four main pottery centres. Many craftsmen still use age-old traditional techniques and skills, either for small pieces of pottery or for the large storage jars used on the island during the Minoan period
You can visit the Monastery of Savior and St. Gedeon, which is located at the beginning of the village of Margarites.
The monastery appears to have started as a nunnery. However, today only one monk lives at the monastery.
When the tour in the museum is finished, our trip’s next destination is the famous
Monastery of Arkadi.
The Arkadi Monastery is built on an altitude of 500 m, on a plateau with olive groves, vineyards, pine, cypress and oak trees. Around the monastery there are many picturesque chapels, while near the monastery begins the beautiful Arkadi gorge. The monastery is surrounded by a strong wall that made it impregnable to enemies. Its rich fortification attracted the rebellious Cretans.
Definitely the most historical monastery of Crete, Arkadi was to become the most sacred symbol of the Revolutions for Freedom by the Cretans, as it was here that the tragic holocaust of 1866 opened the way for the liberation of the island in 1898. As a matter of fact, UNESCO has declared Arkadi a European Monument of Freedom
Rethymnon City is a fascinating walking tour through the narrow winding streets of Rethymnon, the old houses with their wooden covered balconies, the Venetian and the Turkish monuments.
Rethymno combines rarely united features: the old town’s charm and history, with proximity to a long sandy beach.
A walk through time, this stroll will help you gain an understanding of how the city's multilayered history has unfolded, with visits to its most important sites, as the Loggia, the Fortezza, the Rimondi fountain & the Archaeological Musem.
