Stop At: Galle Fort, Church Street, Galle 80000 Sri Lanka
Fort Galle (Galle Fort) is one of five historic sites of Sri Lanka, a UNESCO world heritage site. Therefore, it is absolutely mandatory place to visit, especially if you stay on the southern beaches. This is the largest fortress in Asia built by Europeans. Originally a fortress on this spot was built by the Portuguese in 1588. However, with the coming of the Dutch in the 17th century the fortress was almost completely rebuilt and today is a Dutch fortress, and the date of its Foundation is considered to be the year 1663 (date of completion). For nearly 200 years after the fortress was the main port of Sri Lanka, it served as a stop for ships travelling from Europe to Asia.

Stop At: Maritime Archeological Museum (Galle), Queen Street Duch fort, Galle 80000 Sri Lanka
Maritime Museum is the only museum which aware the public on marine biological and anthropological aspects of Southern coastal area. It is located in the old Dutch ware house of the fort of Galle, built in 1671. The museum was open to the public on 9th May 1992. The first gallery depicts the types of watercrafts used in passenger transport and maritime trading in Southern Sri Lanka. The traditional life style of fishing communities and such fishing techniques are displayed with attractive models and replicas. The second Gallery is focused on marine eco systems and their flora and fauna. Models of mangroves, sea shore plants, turtles, sea birds and marine mammals are displayed with their taxonomic details. Specimens of corals, marine shells and some invertebrates can be observed in the exhibition while a large skeleton of a Whale mounted in the roof giving you a wonderful experience.

Stop At: Turtle Hatchery Hikkaduwa, Galle Road Colombo, Hikkaduwa 80240 Sri Lanka
Species like the Green turtle, Hawksbill turtle, Loggerhead turtle, the Olive Ridley turtle and the Colossus Leatherback turtle have been identified to be the 5 of the 7 species of sea turtles that take refuge in the Southern beaches of Sri Lanka. Most interestingly, the sea turtle hatchery of Hikkaduwa and many others in Kosgoda, Galle, Koggala and Rekawa are run by former poachers themselves that have realized the long term benefit of protecting the species.

Stop At: Jungle Beach, Unawatuna 80600 Sri Lanka
Jungle Beach is a pretty bay just west of Unawatuna. There are a couple of slim-line sandy coves here, some snorkelling offshore. It's a pleasant, hilly 2km walk from Unawatuna; access by road is only via a side lane from the highway. You can bath and enjoy the freshness of the beach if you prefer.
