Stop At: Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project, 13A Galle Road, Kosgoda 80570 Sri Lanka
This Hatchery, run by the Wild Life Protection Society of Sri Lanka, was started in 1981 to protect local turtles from extinction. The hatchery pays fishermen for eggs that they collect at night along the sandy beach. Visitors are able to see large glass tanks full of new born turtle hatchlings. After being fed, the baby turtles are taken to the ocean and released, at the age of 2-4 days. Although October-April is the main laying season, eggs can be found at Kosgoda throughout the year.

This one-hour tour takes you on a boat safari through the primitive depths of the mangrove marshes in Madu River. Traverse the dark and dangerous caverns formed by the thick mangrove forests; interspersed with bright open stretches of water. Learn more about mangroves and their positive effect on ecology. Get a chance to see crocodiles, water snakes, tree snakes and wild boars in their natural habitat. Watch the cormorants; storks and many other avianlife hunt for their prey in swift flow of Madu River. View the pots for catching prawn and shrimp left in some of the shallower areas of the river.

The mask museum has many displays of masks and other items such as primitive tools used to make masks. The mask library is the only one of its kind in Sri Lanka. It has anthropological records on the history of mask making and the traditional performances for which masks are used in Sri Lanka.

The Galle Fort, or Dutch Fort as it is also known, is a fortification first built by the Portugese on the Southwestern coast of Sri Lanka. The initial fortifications, which were built in the late 16th century, were quite basic. However the fort underwent extensive modifications in the 17th century by the Dutch, making it one of the most important archeological, architectural and historic monuments to illutrate the European influence in South East Asia between the 16th and 19th centuries. According to a statement by UNESCO the site was recognized as a World Heritage Site for its unique exposition of an urban ensemble which illustrates the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries which is the criteterion number four for such recognition.

The National Maritime Museum of Galle is a beautiful piece of old Dutch architecture filled chockfull of nautical and marine marvels, dug up from the sea and showcased here. The building has a long and interesting history that is well worth elaborating on.
