See Corfu Town as a Local! On Foot or by Bike
Corfu Town by bicycle
During the tour, the group will have the opportunity to see several historic buildings and learn a lot about how Corfu Town was in the past. The itinerary begins from “GEO bicycling and more” premises in Dassia or form a pre-arranged meeting point, for example in the Port or in Corfu Town. Anyone with rather good fitness level and basic bicycling skills can join the group, as we will follow a straightforward pre-planned itinerary on asphalt terrain. Due to the low difficulty level of the ride, older people, teenagers or persons with manageable disabilities may participate considering that they have some physical strength and elementary bicycling skills. Duration of the tour is estimated to approximately 4-5 hours including one planned stop in Kanoni/Pontikonisi and visits to several places of interest e.g. Old Fortress, Spianada Square, Liston building complex, Governors Palace, St. Georges arch, Churches, seafront lane of “Mouragia” and the Old Port with the Venetian Gate. An optional +1 hour visit to Mon Repos or Old Fortress can be arranged upor request. Length of the entire ride is approximately 12 km. Technical support and first aid will be provided by the guides of the tour.
Corfu Town on Foot
The route will drive us directly to the historic town of Corfu (UNESCO World Heritage Monument), as we begin to ride along the back side of the New Fortress. As we walk towards the historic Old Town we will see several historic buildings and the coastal boulevard of Garitsa, having a spectacular view of the glittering bay that surrounds the Old Fortress. The tour continues with a short visit to the famous Spianada Square, getting an overview of the elegant Liston building complex and then we pass through the St. Georges arch of the Old Palace. Moving through the narrow cobblestone alleys, we will get an overview of the Old Town, we will visit a couple of orthodox churches of unique artistic importance and then we will descend slowly via the romantic seafront lane of “Mouragia” having at our left-hand side some amazing examples of renaissance urban Corfiot architecture and at our right-hand side the sparkling blue sea and the green islet of Vido. The tour continues from the Old Port in the Jewish Quarter, where thousands of simple people lived all their life inside the tall timeworn buildings and finishes back at the New Fortress. A +1 hour visit to the Old Fortress and may be the highlight of the tour as the group will be guided by a Corfiot art restorer. Duration of the tour is estimated to 2-4 hours and distance is approximately 4 km.
