Stop At: Capt. Dave's Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari, 24440 Dana Point Harbor Dr, Dana Point, CA 92629-3018
Your eco-adventure begins in picturesque Dana Point, described by many as the year-round “Whale Capital of the West”. When you arrive at our location in Dana Point Harbor you’ll find free parking and a friendly smile from our “Dolphin Deck” team. If you or one of your guests is celebrating a special occasion, such as a birthday or anniversary, be sure to let us know when reserving so that we can have a special greeting for you upon arrival. After checking in at our Dolphin Deck, about 30 to 45 minutes prior to departure, you can relax under an umbrella, and with the best view in the harbor, enjoy a sandwich, ice cream, cold beverage, or hot cup of coffee until it's time to board.
The primary vessel used for our daily whale watching trips is Manute’a, a high-tech, high-speed, 50-foot catamaran sailboat. There is no assigned seating, but with our uncrowded boat, you'll find plenty of leg room!
Occasionally the safari takes place on one of our alternate custom catamarans including Lily, a 62-foot luxury power catamaran that offers a beautifully appointed cabin, shaded upper sundeck, and spacious bow, all with cushioned seating. Or DolphinSafari, our original catamaran sailboat that features an intimate and up-close whale watching experience with just 20 passengers.
As the boat makes it way out of the harbor (takes under 10 minutes) keep your eyes open for sea lions, marine birds, and occasionally dolphins. After rounding the jetty you’ll be out in open ocean and discovering why CBS LA said "... this tour offers the best whale watching in the world…”! It’s not uncommon to see whales, dolphins, and more only a few feet from the harbor entrance! And within just a few miles of the coast resides a wealth of wildlife that you’ll be able to experience up close and personal. Year-round whales and dolphins, sea lions, sharks, sunfish, and more.
As your whale watching safari gets underway, venture out onto the bow of Manute’a or DolphinSafari, featuring Eye-Spy Tram Nets and delight in the dolphins swimming directly under your feet. Or relax in the shade provided by the cabin on all vessels with cushioned seating and panoramic views of the breathtaking Southern California coastline. The Captain will announce when the two Underwater Viewing Pods on Manute’a are open, giving every passenger the opportunity to get eye-to-eye with dolphins and sometimes whales underwater, without getting wet! Throughout your safari naturalists will provide fun facts about the whales and dolphins, as well as information about the ongoing whale disentanglement efforts that Captain Dave is hands-on involved with. We don’t just watch whales, we rescue them, too! At the conclusion of your trip, you’ll receive a yummy Triple Fudge Brownie, compliments of Mrs. Capt. Dave’s homemade recipe.
