Enjoy plenty of time for breakfast before collection from your door! This morning's journey takes you through the city streets to the agricultural plains of Royal County Meath, so- called due to the region's history as the ancient seat of the High King of Ireland.
Stop At: Trim Castle, Trim Ireland
Our first stop is at the amazing medieval fortress of Trim Castle. Built on high ground overlooking the River Boyne, Trim was built in the 1100s and is the largest and most impressive Norman castle in Ireland. Over the centuries, the castle passed through the hands of several Norman aristocrats before being granted to the family of Arthur Wellesley (Duke of Wellington), the Dublin- born soldier and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom who famously defeated Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815.Guests may recognise Trim Castle as the set of Mel Gibson's Braveheart, which was filmed here in 1994. Enjoy 90 minutes here to explore the grounds and ruins (entrance included).
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Stop At: Hill of Tara (Temair), Ireland
Not far from Trim lies the Hill of Tara. Tara, (Teamhair na Rí in the Irish Gaelic language) is the traditional seat of the High Kings of Ireland. Although essentially a hill, there are an amazing variety of archaeological monuments awaiting discovery here. You'll get a great insight into the rituals of kingship and pagan worship, once so central to pre- Christian European society. Enjoy approximately 30- 40 minutes here to explore and enjoy the countryside.
Duration: 40 minutes
Stop At: Slane Castle, N51, Slane Ireland
A highlight this afternoon is our stop at Slane Castle. Overlooking the site of Battle of The Boyne (1690), this castle has been the family seat of the Lords of Slane since the 1700s. A natural amphitheatre, the grounds have played host to several major rock concerts since the early 1980s including The Rolling Stones, U2, Guns & Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Thin Lizzy, Queen, David Bowie, Neil Young, Bryan Adams, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Robbie Williams, Madonna, Foo Fighters, Oasis, Kings of Leon and Metallica (2019). Aficionados can pick up limited edition vinyl copies of many of these performers in the gift shop. Guests can opt to have lunch in the castle (optional)
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Slane Distillery, N51, Slanecastle Demesne, Co. Meath, Ireland
An unfolding story as unique as their smooth and flavourful, triple-casked whiskey, Slane Distillery is housed within the 250-year-old stables of the iconic Slane Castle estate. The new distillery pays homage to the resilient nature of the Conyngham family heritage and the surrounding lands that they call home.
