About this activity
Meet your driver-guide and the rest of your small group in central Florence. Then, relax in your air-conditioned minivan as you make the scenic journey west to San Miniato, an Arno Valley village in the heart of Tuscany. The forests around San Miniato are famous for white truffle, the most prized and aromatic of truffle varieties. So much so, that the town is said to supply nearly 80% of the world's sought-after gourmet products.
After roughly an hour on the road, arrive in the woodland area and meet your truffle hunter for the tour. Get acquainted with his hunting dog, a canine with hunting instincts and a sense of smell sharpened to seek out truffle, and then follow the duo through the sun-dappled woods. The walk is suitable for all, although trekking shoes are advised for the experience.
As you weave through the trees, watch as the dog sniffs around to find the treats hidden under the forest floor. Then, feel the thrill as the dog strikes gold and digs for the edible treasure, and your hunter recovers the precious truffle.
When the hunt is over, meet back up with your driver-guide and travel to a local truffle shop for a light 2-course lunch. Savor a truffle-based appetizer, followed by a dish of tagliolini al tartufo complemented by Italian wine. Afterward, continue to a local winery in the esteemed Chianti wine region. Meet the winemaker host and sample some of the estate’s Chianti DOCG and Super Tuscan IGT varietals as you learn how recent innovation and winemaking traditions have combined to make such beautiful wine.
Finally, relax on the ride back to the start point in Florence where your tour ends.

How many people can say they have hunted for black truffles and then enjoyed the fruits of their labor? My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed going with the truffle hunter and his dogs as they meandered through the woods in search of truffles. Along the way, we learned about the unique conditions required for truffles as well as the condition to get them. We brought back five truffles. We were then treated to a simple but thoughtful lunch that incorporated truffles in every course including dessert. Afterwards, we traveled to a lovely vineyard where we learned about olive oil and wine and enjoyed tastings of each. Our guide Paola is a sommelier so he had a tremendous insight and passion for the subject at hand. Overall, this was an amazing experience that will be a memory we cherish.
Hillary our guide is a trained sommelier..her love for Florence, her fabulous personality, her warmth, intelligence made the day the best tour I have ever taken. The beautiful home where the truffle hunt begins..the dogs, the lunch..followed by a 15th century winery...Chianti, Super Tuscan! Excellen
This was the perfect excursion from Florence! In our small group of 6 (3 sets of couples who didn't know each other before the day began) we melded well and had fun exploring the Tuscan countryside, wine and food together. Hillary, our guide was exceptional and was a font of Italian history and knowledge.
The entire experience was wonderful. From the start of the tour, the drive to the farm, the friendly farmer, his super dogs, his way of explaining all aspects of truffle hunting...followed by an amazing lunch...all was superb. It was followed by wine tasting and learning the nuances of wine making...also par excellence. All in all, we had a wonderful day......a memory for a lifetime
