About this activity
You’ll be picked up from central Frankfurt in the morning and taken on a 2.5-hour drive to Trier. Located in a lovely valley on the banks of the Moselle River, Trier offers many historic attractions without being overcrowded by tourists.
Your guide will take you on a walking tour to learn about Trier’s intriguing past. Touted as the oldest city in Germany, founded around 16 BC, Trier was once the capital of an ancient Roman province. The number and quality of surviving monuments are an outstanding testimony to Roman civilization.
Today, Trier is home to a whopping eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, many of which you'll see on your tour. Visit Cathedral of St Peter and Church of Our Lady, and explore several Roman monuments like the Imperial Baths, the massive Roman Amphitheatre and the mighty Porta Nigra, the best-preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps. You’ll also visit the Electoral Palace, the birthplace of Karl Marx and arguably one of the most beautiful Rococo palaces in the world.
During your free time, wander around Trier at your leisure – there’s so much to see! Perhaps visit the Roman Bridge, the Roman Imperial Throne Room and the Forum Baths, or explore Main Market (Hauptmarkt), Palace Garden (Palastgarten) or one of the many museums, like the Archaeological Museum (Rheinisches Landesmuseum).
When your time in Trier is over, reconvene with your guide and make your way back to Frankfurt.

We really enjoyed touring the city of Trier. Seeing the ancient Roman wall and so many of the Roman buildings in a city that was founded in 17 BC was mind-boggling. We took a ride on the trolley and got an overview of the city, and then Peter led us on a walking tour of the points of interest. My favorites were climbing to the various floors of the Porta Nigra, the town gate, and walking around the ancient Amphitheater. Going inside the three beautiful churches was also a high point of the day. The Imperial Baths looked amazing, but they were closed for construction when we were there. We also saw the Roman Bridge and walked through the Palace Gardens, which will be lovely as the spring buds and blooms start coming out. The personal attention from being in a small group with our own guide made for a delightful day.
