Stop At: Weligama Beach, Matara Sri Lanka
Stilt fishing, has been a traditional fishing practice found among the fishing communities in the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka. Fishermen seated on a stilt, made by attaching a wide bar to a large wooden pole carrying a rudimentary fishing rod is a permanent fixture of the scene that cannot be missed when traveling Down South of Sri Lanka on the coastal road. The rudimentary equipment used in stilt fishing is manufactured by the fishermen themselves, using an ancient tradition and specific types of wood. The stilt is exclusively made from the wood of the suicide tree (Cerbera odollam), which contains toxins that discourage speedy decay of the wood. Most stilt fishermen still use fishing rods fashioned with the Fishtail Palm rod (Caryota urens), which are easy to hold and comparatively long-lasting. Mainly seen at sunrise and dusk, these fishermen make a catch of small mackerels and herrings, who move closer to the shore for feeding and sell their daily catch twice a day to the small vendors of the neighborhood.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Jungle Beach, Unawatuna 80600 Sri Lanka
The Beach is enclosed by headland on the other side too. The entire stretch of beach is well sheltered by a sweep of palm-fringed land right behind it. And well protected too, the beach enclosed by double reef breaks down the impact of the waves of Indian Ocean to make it ideal for safe swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving & even for you to learn surfing. The reef shelters more species of fish than the Great Barrier Reef. It is said by many industry experts to be among the top ten beaches of the world. The reef off the far end of the beach, 150m offshore can be reached from shore & you can even venture into the main waters of the Indian Ocean by traditional twin log like fishing catamaran made solely of timber.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Galle Fort, Church Street, Galle 80000 Sri Lanka
The Galle fort is a world heritage site and the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers. The city of Galle plays an important role in Sri Lankan history, specially when considering about the international relationships during the historical times. Galle has it all, historic colonial sights, meditative temples, sandy beaches and rivers teeming with wildlife, all of which make this southern seaside escape a must-see on most Sri Lankan travel itineraries. Its origins are ancient; as a seaport it dates back millennia.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project, 13A Galle Road, Kosgoda 80570 Sri Lanka
The Turtle Care Centre at Kosgoda beach is one of 18 turtle hatcheries along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. The centre is located in the South Western coastal village of Kosgoda and was establised in 1981. It is also very popular as all five species of turtles that visit Sri Lanka nest in Kosgoda. This is not so with many of the other hatcheries around the island whose beaches host only some of the species.
