Whale watching in Sri Lanka is one of the most unique and interesting water related activities you can do during your holiday tour in Mirissa Sri Lanka. The sea of Mirissa is the place where you can see whales and dolphins while travelling in Sri Lanka. Many sightings have been reported in November to April in the year.
Many pygmy blue whales can be seen at Dondra point in Sri Lanka. You can access it through the Mirissa Harbour or Weligama Harbour. In April, sightings of Blue Whales are almost certain, for those setting out from Mirissa, Sperm Whales are seen in deep water. Other marine mammles to be seen include Long-snouted Spinner Dolphins. With the advent of the South-west Monsoon (May to September) large numbers of seabirds can be observed. These include Pomarine Skuas, Flesh-footed and Sooty Shearwaters and vaious species of Petrels and Terns.
