The Lychee Bay is one of many old canals running though Liwan and covered-up in the middle of the 20th century for sanitary reasons. Today, it is regarded as a masterpiece amongst Asian Games renovation projects and a new destination for tourists in Guangzhou. The small canal offers a highly idealized version of what Guangzhou might have resembled in the 19th century, with lychee trees growing along the waterfront. The 668-meter waterway has won praise from nearby residents and the authorities plan to continue developing such canals "in the hope to rival Paris or Venice."

It is the largest Gothic stone structure building in China, and the main church of the Catholic parish of Guangzhou. Because the church is masonry by granite, it is commonly known as "stone chamber".After the Second Opium War, the French Government, under the , confiscated the Catholic Church in Guangzhou under the pretext of the Qing court, threatened the Qing government with compensation for damages, and forced the official government to rent out the former governor of Guangdong and Guangxi to build the church. It was built in 1863 and completed in 1888.
