About this activity
Your Kohala Zip & Dip tour begins with an early morning pickup at your Kona or Waikoloa hotel for the drive up the glorious Kona coastline. Pass through the charming plantation towns of Hawi and Kapaau, in the Halawa Lands of King Kamehameha, and keep an eye out for large marine life offshore, including spinner dolphins and humpback whales (in the winter). After a safety briefing from your guide, gear up and climb aboard your 6x6 Pinzgauer open air off-roading military vehicle and enjoy the Kohala views on the way to the top of the course.
From the moment you begin your aerial adventure at the Kohala zipline park in Kapaau, you will be enthralled by the unspoiled beauty of Kohala, the northernmost region of the Big Island. Perched among lofty trees, this exciting canopy park features soaring tree platforms, five elevated suspension bridges and nine thrilling ziplines. Exclusive features, such as the twin WhisperLines€™, ensure you'll hear the sounds of the forest, and not the sound of metal on metals from the ziplines. Safety is the top priority and courses are inspected twice daily, and you have the ability to choose the speed and orientation of your zipline. A total course length of 4,580 feet (1,395 meters) and height of 140 feet (42 meters) ensure that this adrenaline-rushing experience will be the highlight of your Hawaii vacation.
After your aerial trekking, your naturalist guide will continue your adventure to explore a private mountain stream with waterfalls, ancient Hawaiian agricultural sites, and a private waterfall swim awaits. Your destination is the Kohala Ditch Trail, built in the early 1900s to irrigate the surrounding former sugar plantation. Hike approximately 1.0 mile (1.6 km), passing blasted-out tunnels, ditches and an old aqueduct while your guide shares the history of the plantation and the construction of its impressive irrigation system. Throughout the moderately challenging hike, see multiple Kohala waterfalls that dot the lush and diverse landscape. Stop at the last fall for a chance to jump into the refreshing pool and cool off under the cascade. Take a break and enjoy a picnic lunch at a breathtaking private picnic area overlooking lush green valleys and 1,000 ft. sea cliffs plunging into the ocean. This is the adventure you'll take home and talk about for years to come. At the end of the hike, relax on the ride back to your hotel, where your 9-hour tour concludes at approximately 4:30 p.m. in the afternoon.
