About this activity
After pickup from your Waikoloa, Kohala or Kailua-Kona hotel in the morning (included in tour price), head south along the Big Island's coast by spacious, air-conditioned vehicle to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. On the way, you’ll stop to take a tour of a renowned Kona coffee farm and taste freshly brewed Kona coffee. You will have time to purchase some coffee to bring the taste of Hawaii back home with you.
Continue to a local sweetbread bakery and enjoy lunch in a garden setting with bakery fresh bread for your sandwich or a light salad. After lunch we head to Punalu’u Beach, where you’ll often see turtles basking on the black sand. Take an easy hike along the beach made from the active volcano with truly black sand.
Once inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (an UNESCO World Heritage Site), follow your guide on an optional hike where you’ll see sulphur banks and vents emitting hot steam. At Halema'uma'u Crater, you’ll get the unique chance to see into the heart of the active volcano where legend has it lives the Hawaiian volcano goddess Pele. From the cooler climate up on the volcanic mountain, we will then head down to a lower elevation for a dinner of local food choices like the famous loco moco and Kailua pork or something more familiar like a steak or chicken dinner in a popular restaurant.
And don’t forget about your iPad! Throughout your journey, you can use your iPad to see high-definition photos and videos and learn background information on the sites you visit. While in the van, you are also welcome to play games, listen to music, watch movies and see videos about Hawaii.

We are Hawaii residence that wanted a better understanding of the Big Island and we sure did. It was all we wanted and much more. Our guide, Bryce, was incredibly knowledgeable about a broad range of topics and truly a pleasure to be with. The group was small which was nice. The vehicle was clean and comfortable. The stops were all interesting and Bryce added additional stops as time permitted. Those interested in this tour should know that it is a long day and will involve a good deal of walking, however the physical activity is relatively short with driving breaks between. Great tour!
We were a party of 9 and our tour guide, Katie, was patient, kind, and attentive. It truly is a wonderful experience and lunch and dinner were delicious!
Just a wonderful experience to see first hand the beauty of this island.
This was the best tour I have been on. Great day with a wonderful guide Preston.
For the positives: Dominick was a super smart guy and knew every inch of the Island - the roads, the different types of fruits, veggies, the little things about the Island. Amazing knowledge and very talented. Plus, an excellent driver and a really nice gentle fellow. Very patient and pleasant. If you needed a tour guide ever, you want Dominick. Gave excellent details about the Island. Would not have gotten it if we were on our own. For the negatives: Too expensive. We should have done it by car. Was a little lazy to drive but if you have a car, you don't need Viator. Go on your own and take your time. The roads are fantastic and even during the holidays there is not a whole lot of traffic. You can manage.
Great tour. Guide Katie was excellent. Very friendly and informative. Lots of walking and a very long day but totally enjoyed it.
