Cultural East Coast
During the Japanese occupation, the influx of Japanese immigrants was particularly great in the Hualien area, a period of history that is still very much in evidence today. This half-day tour takes you on a journey to discover these touches of Japanese style and architecture, which have created a beautiful fusion of heritage, unique to the east coast. Begin at Jian Chinxiu Temple, a traditional Japanese Takono-style temple built for the large number of Japanese in the area in 1917. Onwards to Liyu Lake where, on a clear day, the mirror-like reflections of Liyu mountain and the cotton clouds above make for spectacular photos. Get your final culture fix at the Hualien Creative and Cultural Park. Housed in a former Japanese winery, this collection of contemporary galleries, exhibition halls, boutique shops, teahouses and artist residences showcase cutting-edge Taiwanese art and creativity in a modern factory restoration.
