Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Misir Carsisi (Spice Market), Rustem Pasa Mahallesi, Erzak Ambari Sok. No:92 Eminonu - Fatih, Istanbul 34116 Turkey
Istanbul‘s Egyptian (Spice) Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı, built 1664), at the southern end of the Galata Bridge near the Eminönü ferry docks (map), is filled with the fragrance of the exotic East.
Spices, dried fruits, cheeses, sausages, jams, nuts and seeds, lokum (Turkish Delight) and other edibles fill most of the shops, though jewelry and other high-margin goods have begun to move in.
It’s no wonder: this is prime retail space, right at the southern end of the Galata Bridge on the Golden Horn in the Eminönü district, right next to the New Mosque (Yeni Cami).
Duration: 40 minutes
Stop At: Kariye Museum (The Chora Church), Kariye Cami Sk. No: 8 Fatih, Istanbul 34087 Turkey
Chora is considered one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture. Famous for its late Byzantine mosaics and frescoes, Chora is one of the most important Byzantine sites in Istanbul. The first church was known as Chora, which carried the double meaning of being affiliated to a monastery outside the city walls, and of one of the adjectives used to describeJesus ‘’the widest sphere enclosed by man’s spiritual world’’. The church was built in 6th century. Later destroyed in an earthquake, the church was rebuilt in the 11th century.
Duration: 45 minutes
Stop At: Suleymaniye Mosque, Prof. SIddIk Sami Onar Cd. No:1 Süleymaniye Mah, Istanbul 34116 Turkey
Suleymaniye mosque, or better known as the mosque of Suleyman the Magnificent, was built in the 16th century by the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan for Sultan Suleyman the Magnificient, also known as the Legislator. It stands on a hilltop (3rd hill) dominating the Golden Horn and contributing to the skyline of Istanbul. The mosque is the largest mosque of Istanbul.
The mosque was ordered by the sultan Suleyman, and architect Sinan built it in 7 years, between 1550-1557 AD. Like all big and important mosques of that period, also this mosque was built as a complex including a hospital, library, madrasa, kitchen and hospice for the poor, hamam, and shops. It's one of the best examples of Ottoman Islamic architecture in Istanbul.
