Wonderful trip to some of Greece's less touristy places. Epidaurus is a extremely beautiful coastal city with many old buildings. The island of Hydra was almost too beautiful for words. Using donkeys to go up the steep inclines was an energy saver. Nikos, our guide loves to share his vast knowledge of Greece. He was very considerate and even shared his family with us.
We chose this tours to see a different aspect of Greece, the Pelopponese. We travelled in early March, which is considered to be out of season, but we had a very enjoyable time and were well looked after by our hosts, Nikos and Yota. The first day is perhaps a little too busy, we absolutely loved visiting Mycenae, nice early arrival before the big buses pulled in. we were able to wander the ruins and spend time in the wonderful museum on our own. Such a delight. We enjoyed our visit to Napflio, the views were stunning. We did climb down the 999 stairs from the Fort, but would advise anyone who suffers from vertigo to rethink that option. Lunch in a small local taverna was delicious, but the driving and the beautiful sunshine made us very tired before we reached Epidaurus, so we didn't really get a lot from that visit. For us that would have been better to visit on the way back to Athens. Our hosts home base at Ermioni was beautiful, we loved this town and the walks around it, through its small forest on the peninsular and the promenades. The apartment was very comfortable, and the self serve breakfast was adequate. Yota made some beautiful biscuits and supplied fresh crusty bread and cakes. We spent the afternoon of the second day on Hydra, which was mainly closed down, just a few coffee shops and a few souvenir shops open. We spent our time looking through the museum and walking long distances around the coastal paths. The next day we visited Spetses by ferry, what a difference, we loved Spetses. Lots of activity and beautiful clear water. Definely a holiday destination , especially for young families. The following day we returned to Athens, a pleasant scenic drive with Nikos making sure we saw as much of the coastline as possible. This was very much appreciated and we had the extra bonus of seeing a large ship pass through the Corinth Canal, as the road disappeared into the depths. A lovely few days on the Pelopponese and would suggest a worthwhile inclusion to any itinerary. Chris and Veronica Australian travellers in our 60's
I stumbled upon this trip when looking for things to do in Athens and the surrounding area. The experience was great as you are able to travel away from Athens and see a bit of the Greek countryside and more local areas. Nikos and Yota are wonderful hosts and will work to accommodate you in any way so you can get the most out of your trip. We opted for a home cook meal the first night we were there which cost extra but is well worth the money. Yota is an amazing cook and baker and we didn't find anywhere else that had baklava as good as hers. If you opt for the meal you will not go hungry we had leftovers for the next day. The islands are both beautiful. My personal favorite was Hydra. The apartment tree house has one bath and two bedrooms, one with a full bed and one with bunk beds. There is a full kitchen so you can cook if you want and the balcony view shows one side of Ermioni peninsula and the main port. Note: We traveled during the winter so we didn't swim--although the water was warm enough--and a number of restaurants and shops were closed because of the off season which was a little disappointing, but on the plus side there were few tourist around. At Epidaurus, for awhile we were the only 2 people in the theater until a small tour group showed up. Same for Mycenae. Something to think about if you are planning a trip.
