Visit a special church to learn more about the connections between religion and food.

Head to one of the oldest bakeries in Athens that's been producing a staple of the Athenian diet for decades for a tasting and to hear the stories of a city coming back to life.

Stop At: Central Market Athens, Monastiraki Greece

Head through the winding backstreets of Omonia passing amazing street art and the multicultural centre of Athens where people from all over the world have settled for a new life in Greece. This gritty area is regenerating after years of neglect and is an amazing place to learn about the changing social and culinary scene in the city as people bring new flavours and dishes from their homelands enriching the local food scene; there are still some really old Greek businesses here as well and it's a great place for keen photographers to get some great shots. Stop on the way to taste and learn about the liquid gold of Greece: olives! Enjoy a platter of home grown pickled and preserved goodies and meet the people who produce and supply these dietary staples to the city.

For those who have in interest in alcohol our next stop will be a good one! Tucked away in a small backstreet is one of the best purveyors of Greek spirits and wine. Stop here for a tasting and to see that there is more to Greek drinks that ouzo.

Within a few moments you'll be at Varvakios, the central market of Athens where fresh, seasonal produce arrives in abundance; it's a world of colour, aroma and life, always bustling and always exciting: this is one of the few remaining un-gentrified municipal markets left in Europe. Here you'll taste fresh local produce and discover the tiny cafes, bars and shops that have been providing for the locals for generations. Ingredients will be collected here for some of the creations you'll enjoy back at The Greek Kitchen!

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Central Market Athens, Monastiraki Greece

As we leave the fresh produce section of the market you'll get a break and the chance to buy a cup of coffee at one of the best roasters in Athens; see how kafe Ellinikos, Greek coffee, is made and served, the aroma in this bustling shop is amazing and a pick-me-up in itself!

Take the moment to relax, browse the wonderful sweet products on offer like spoon sweet and halva and enjoy a chat with your Greek Kitchen Host.

Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Central Market, Athinas 42, Athens 999-20 Greece

Busy, noisy and real: Varvakios Central Market Hall has been the best source for meat, fish and seafood in Athens since the mid-1800's. People still flock here from all over the city to pick up the best items, it's especially crazy during festive periods when food traditions are at their most important. Your Greek Kitchen Host will tell you all about these times as you walk through the halls.

During your time in the meat hall you'll stop at a butcher for the unique experience of creating your own chicken souvlaki sticks: one of the best on-the-go snacks on offer in Greece, you'll grill them back at The Greek Kitchen at the end of the tour (non-meat eaters will make vegetable souvlaki sticks, be sure to let your host know).

In Greece we know where our food comes from, we know the animals and the cuts and now you will learn as you pass from the meat hall to the fish and seafood with more recipe ideas and information on what's in the local dishes for inspiration for your future dining during your stay in Greece.

Duration: 30 minutes

One of the best food tours I've been on. I struck lucky in that it turned out that I was the only person booked, so it was a personal private tour! My guide, Thanasis, was extremely knowledgeable about the products, their histories and origins, and demonstrated great enthusiasm for the subject. He has obviously built up a rapport with many of the suppliers, and I had an extremely enjoyable tour. Only one caveat - come hungry! The tastings and then Lunch, (cooked for me back at The Greek Kitchen), filled me up completely! They were kind enough to pack up my leftovers for a snack later!
