Stop At: The Monastery of Daphni, Athinon avenue, Athens Greece
The Daphni Monastery was founded towards the end of the sixth century A.D. on the site of the Sanctuary of Apollo which had been desecrated by the Goths in 395. The Sanctuary of Apollo was built in the Ionic style using the thinnest and smallest columns. The columns stand on a base with an ornamental scroll at the top. A few of the columns of the temple have been preserved. One of the four Ionic columns of the ancient Sanctuary of Apollo remains at the site, as it was re-used in the Daphni Monastery. The other columns were removed and taken to London by Thomas Bruce, Earl of Elgin (of Elgin Marbles fame). The columns, column bass, and column tops from the Sanctuary of Apollo are currently in the possession of the British Museum.

Our tour was exceptional. Our tour guide Terry Bellos was truly a gentleman and a scholar. Our time is limited however we received a wealth very interesting and colorful history of Athens and the Athenians in just a few short hours. Terri was very personable and knowledgeable with excellent delivery. I would highly recommend him and his Exceptional tour style to anyone truly interested in the beauty and rich history of classic Athens .
We were highly impressed with our private tour and the personalized experience. Our tour guide, Terry created an experience tailored to our interests. Terry was highly professional and quite knowledgeable while providing valuable insights on the sites within the city and beyond. No detail was missed. From the wealth of information on the city, historical data, recommendations on where to go, best places to get/take pictures, etc. Terry finished the tour at a fabulous local restaurant. I will definitely be booking next time and for longer next time I visit. Thank you for making our trip wonderful.
