About this activity
We will start from Athens and drive through a scenic and beautiful landscape inside the Peloponnese peninsula, heading on the west part of it, where the ancient Olympia is.
Our first stop is the Corinth Canal, a sea passage that connects the Saronic and the Corinthian Gulf in Aegean Sea, completed in 1893. Time for rest and taking some great photos of the Canal.
Then, we will drive towards ancient Olympia, the birth place of the ancient Olympic Games in Classical times, more specificaly in 776 BC. A place dedicated mainly to God Zeus, having over 70 significant buildings. There you will visit both the archaeological site and the museum.
The Games were held every 4 years from the 8th century BC untill 4th century AD.
You will visit the temple of Zeus, Pelopion, the stadium, the temple of Hera, the Phillipeion, the Phidias workshop and many other structures. The museum is located at the same area, housing great exhibits, such as the statue of Hermes of Praxiteles, the Nike of Paionios, the statue of Hadrian and many others.
When you finish your visit in the site and the museum, it is time for a nice walk around the village and lunch in a traditional taverna.
Finally, we head back to Athens.
