Stop At: Namo Buddha (Stupa), Kathmandu Nepal
The Kathmandu Valley has long been known as a pilgrimage place for Buddhists. The Valley exudes a unique spirituality found in very few places on earth. There are three unique Buddhist heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley that have attracted visitors for thousands of years. Swayambhu and Bouddhanath are easy to get to, but Namo Buddha can be a bit of a challenge as it is located on a high point overlooking the Himalayas away from the major cities of the Valley. However, it can be easily done in a half-day pilgrimage journey.
Namo Boudha commemorates the true, unselfish and dying love the Lord Buddha exhibited in his enlightenment. In a previous lifetime, Lord Buddha was a prince in the Kathmandu Valley when he came upon a dying tigress that had just given birth to her cubs. She was dying of hunger, as her energy was spent giving birth.
The tigress looked longingly at the young prince and he in his love offered his arm which was his life in order to provide the tiger mother with nourishment that she needed to produce milk to feed her young cubs. As the young prince and future Buddha lay dying, the tigress’s eyes took on new light as her body was now able to produce life-saving milk for her cubs.
The story of the significance of Namo Buddha emphasizes the importance that Lord Buddha attached to all life, whether it is human or members of the animal kingdom. The grounds here reflect this incredible serenity as you are far away from the noise of the cities of the Kathmandu Valley. Here the winds from the mountains grace the landscape. Wander the gardens amidst the monastery and the large statue honoring the sacrifice of Lord Buddha. From its high point, looking north at the beautiful snow-capped ranges of the Himalayas. Feel the peacefulness of the place as the tranquility touches your very soul.
This is just a half-day journey with a private car picking you up at your hotel and taking you in the morning to Namo Buddha. Once you have arrived, your guide will show you around as well as let you enter the cave where the young prince and future Buddha discovered the tigress and her cubs. There will be time for lunch before having to head back to your hotel, returning around 2 pm.
