About this activity
You will be picked up from your hotel in a Tuk-Tuk and taken to Fort Kochi. Visit the local laundry, Dhobi Khana, that has been run by the Tamil speaking Vannan community for centuries. The laundry was started for washing the uniforms of the Portuguese and then the Dutch soldiers. To date clothes are hand washed here.
Next drive to a Hindu temple that is probably the only temple in India where salt is given as an offering to God. Explore a local bazaar as you drive past shops selling all kinds of wares.
Drive past the 16th century Thirumala Devaswom Temple, one of the biggest temples of the Gowda Saraswath Brahmin community. Entry to the temple is restricted to members of this community.
Explore a nearby fruits and vegetables market before visiting the Brahmin quarters of the city. Learn to make a Kolam decoration with colored rice flour. These decorations are made at the entrance of Brahmin homes in South India.
Next drive through a short stretch of the 1.2 mile long Bazaar Road that is known for its spice and lentils shops. Make a quick stop at a Syrian Orthodox church, St. George Koonan Kurishu Church.
End the tour with lunch (for those taking the morning tour) or refreshments (for those taking the afternoon tour) at a local restaurant (own expense).
Afterwards you will be dropped back at your hotel.
