About this activity
Meet Leela at her home where you will enjoy a refreshing welcome drink and a chat about her life in Kochi. Then your culinary adventure starts with a visit to a local vegetable and spice market where Leela will help you choose produce and spices from her favorite vendors. Next return home to learn to cook a traditional Syrian Christian Kerala Sadhya, a feast typically served only at banquets.
In Leela's kitchen she will teach you about her family's culinary traditions and how to prepare some of her favorite recipes, which have been handed down from generation to generation. Learn to cook a few traditional Syrian Sadhya dishes using freshly-picked garden vegetables, from pungent ginger to snappy green beans. Once the meal is ready you will sit together at the table to enjoy your feast! Leela's husband will join you when he is available.
Dishes you may sample include appam (thin pancakes made with fermented rice batter and coconut milk) served with chicken stew or fish moilee (a coconut-based fish stew), a wonderful fish or prawn fry, fresh vegetables, rice, yoghurt, and pappad (crispy wafers made from gram flour).
Please note, this is not a professional cooking class, rather this experience is a visit into an authentic, local home to meet a local person and share the culture and cuisine together.
