About this activity
There are certain things you probably know about Polish cuisine. Our guess is that the first one would be, to put it mildly, it’s definitely hearty… The other is vodka. But what we drink, the sorts of food we love and the ways we prepare it can tell you many things about the history of our country, this region of the world, and us Poles. Take a chance to immerse yourself in the history of Polish food and learn all about our eating and drinking customs. We will take you back to the roots of Polish cuisine, which, just like our history, are diverse and complex.
Try some of the best soups and sour pickles straight from the barrel at a traditional market. Get to know the origins of the bagel and kielbasa (sausage). Learn why the most popular pierogi (dumplings) are described as ‘Russian-style’ and what was a staple of Slavic diet for centuries, well before grain became popular. And then there is that question: where does vodka come from? There’s no better way to tackle it than over a glass of czysta and learning how to drink it properly from a local. Beyond that, we’ll tread into ‘dangerous’ territory as we teach you about all the amazing flavours Polish vodka can have. And don’t worry – there will be plenty of time (and space) for something sweet, too!
Is your mouth watering yet? Do you need more teasers? We believe these are rhetorical questions…
During the tour you can try*:
• obwarzanek
• Polish sausages and pickles
• regional cheese
• pierogi – Polish dumplings
• bread from a traditional bakery
• herring with onion and shots of regional vodka
• slice of bread with lard
• sour rye soup
• buckwheat groats with pork scratching and soured milk
• and something sweet for dessert
*Tasting menu can be different depending on what will be available on the day of the tour.
