About this activity
Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the most precious and fascinating Polish monuments. The first tourist trail in Wieliczka was established as early as the beginning of the19th century. A couple of centuries later the salt mine was designated as one of the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites (1978).
The underground path leads through numerous drifts, galleries and chambers, where traces of mining activity have been preserved, as well as examples of art, theme compositions relating to the history of the mine and its legends. Wieliczka is the world's largest mining heritage museum with a collection encompassing unique pieces of mining equipment reflecting the development of mining techniques from the Middle Ages until today. Moreover, the microclimate of the mine has a beneficial impact on visitors who suffer from asthma and allergies.
The tour starts with a descent of 64 meters by stairs. You are then led through a number of chambers and shown underground lakes, shrines and salt monuments. The trip finishes at the level of 135 meters below the surface and the return to the surface is by lift.

We enjoyed the tour. We were advised of an 0800 departure, and to arrive 15 minutes prior. When we went to the office, we were told 0850. Got up early, rushed breakfast and now had an hour to waste. Need more accurate times, especially for the first departure of the day.
A lot of standing around when you first get there but once inside it is amazing. Be warned this is not really suitable for people with walking problems etc nor young children. It starts with the never ending stairs! Over 300. thenthe mine which is really interesting, we unfortunately had a guide with a very strong accent which made it a little difficult to understand, but we read the legends and most of it is self explanatory the scenes inside are very well done. and after much walking the church is mind blowing! All in all a very good experience and enjoyable. My only problem is that for me the walking got too much which I suffered for the next day lol.Highly reccomend this tour
Good tour but very rushed. Pushed along not even a chance of a cuppa. Viator possibly the worst tour operators I have booked with
Good trip, very interesting couldnt really make out what guide was saying (think it was equipment).but overall good day and not far from krakow.
Absolutely outstanding. The tour was well run, the guide very knowledgeable and the group not too large to manage where we could ask individual questions.
You can miss going here. Was amazing. Don't let the no of steps put you off. Really wasn't that bad. The guide is excellent. Can hear what's being said on listening device/earpiece.
The salt mine was fabulous, like no place I have ever been. I recommend visiting. I am not sure the guided tour adds much though, it would have been as easy to take the train to the mine and the wait would have been similar. Either way, a guide from the mine itself is provided.
The tour was much in-depth and the mine had more to it than I expected. The tour leader was very knowledgeable and made it fun.
The salt mine was well worth a visit. It is about 30 minutes from the old town. The tour was good, however I have given this 4 stars as the audio equipment was crackly and therefore it was difficult to hear the tour guide at times.
This was a very interesting trip. Our guide was very knowledgeable and we enjoyed his sense of humour. It requires lots of walking and downward stairs. If you’re claustrophobic, don’t go because you won’t like the elevator back up.
Informative tour about the salt mines, but being underground the headset connection was weak so you had to be close to the guide to hear. Our group was large and could not fit everyone in the area she was speaking about so those at the back could not hear. Tour starts with going down 54 flights of stairs and lots of walking so wear good shoes.
Amazing insight to the old salt mining days. Superb sculptures and the church is absolutely magnificent. Did feel like we were being rushed along by our guide at times an extra few minutes at each briefing stop would've been nice but overall the guide was very good. One thing that was annoying was the fact that you are expected to pay 10 zloty if you will d h to take photos. No problem with this but found most weren't paying but still taking lots of photos. Out of our party of around 30 people only 3 of us actually paid the fee but everyone was taking photos! This needs knocking on the head somehow. Otherwise a wonderful day.
A lot of waiting to go into the mine. A bit cheesy. Not worth the money. A full day out and not worth it.
We really enjoyed the salt mines, loved the chapel and carvings, magda was our guide and she was lovely, the only down side was having to wait for 45 minutes for our bus to return surely given that you are dropped off and they know how long the tour takes the bus should be there for you , I would recommend this tour but be warned there are 800 steps and a lot of walking
Very interesting, great pickup and tour guide was fantastic. If in krakow would definitely recommend a visit
Wear some comfie walking shoes for this tour. You will walk down multiple sets of stairs to reach the first level of the mine and continue to walk on uneven surfaces. That being said, the mine is very interesting; it is incredible what can be done with salt! You have to see it to believe it. Definitely worth a visit from Krakow.
