Cameron Highlands was named after the discoverer William Cameron in 1885, a British government Surveyor who came across, "A fine plateau with gentle slopes", while he was researching through dense jungle on a mapping expedition. Creating a hill station in the area was first voiced in 1888 by Sir Hugh Low, a Perak resident who propose the idea it might be a suitable place for a retreat and farmland. Cameron Highlands was a heaven for the British who were stationed in Malaya as it provided relief from the hot and humid tropical climate of the lowlands.

Cameron Highlands stands at 1524 meters (5000 feet) above sea level, enjoys a cool climate, with temperatures rarely higher than 25°C and low than 10 °C. In 1929, John Archibald Russell, who was the son of a British administrative officer started a tea plantation which is now the famous BOH Tea Plantation. BOH stands for Best of Highland. The other tea plantation was established in 1932, by the Shuparshad family and known as Bharat Tea Plantation in Cameron Valley brand. Cameron Highlands is the smallest district in Pahang, nestled between the State of Perak and State of Pahang, covering an area of 443 square kilometers.
