We booked this tour in advance to get an idea of the local food in Kyoto. It began at 10 a.m. with a walk through the Nishiki Market. Our guide was fantastic. Kohei was knowledgable about the customs, culture, and food. He initially provided us with an overview of Shinto customs and rituals at a shrine inside the market, and then arranged for food sampling along the walk through the covered market: from wasabi-coated nuts to hand soap to sake. We tried scallops a la blow torch, and my wife even ate an octopus with a quail egg stuffed in its head. The tour ended in a local restaurant with a 7-course meal. Kohei provided visual prompts, including chopstick etiquette and explanations of the various food we ate. It was an outstanding tour. I would recommend taking it early in your visit rather than just before you leave as we did.
Really enjoyed this tour! We were lucky enough to be in a small group of four people. Our tour guide, Chie, took us through the market, introduced us to the owners of several stands and described the different foods we were sampling. She answered our questions, even taking the time to explain the proper etiquette for visiting a Shinto shrine there's one right next to Nishiki Market. After the market tour, we ate a delicious seven-course kaiseki meal in a traditional tatami room at a nearby Japanese restaurant. Chie explained how a kaiseki meal works, described each course in detail and translated for the waitress. This tour is a great way to explore one of the most famous parts of Kyoto. I'm glad we took a tour - we would have missed out on a lot if we'd just strolled through on our own. We learned a lot about Japanese cuisine. Since we took this tour as the first thing on our trip, it was very helpful to have this experience behind us at other meals and markets later in our trip.
Lovely tour of the market with our guide, Rosali. My mom and I got lucky since we were the only people in the tour! I like to check out markets, and this did not disappoint. The Lunch was great: good japanese eating with good beef. My mom specially enjoyed the rice crackers and bought some for souvenirs. I highly recommend this tour.
