Stop At: Obidos Village, Obidos Portugal
The medieval village of Óbidos is one of the most picturesque and well preserved in Portugal. Óbidos presents a selection of historical, cultural and artistic monuments that impress the visitors, making Óbidos one of the most attractive places to visit and share experiences.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Castelo de Obidos, Rua Direita Santa Maria, Obidos 2510-079 Portugal
This castle, of Roman origin, was built under Arab domain. After the Christian conquest (1148), the castle was repaired and enlarged many times. During the reign of King Manuel I, the governor orders the construction of a palace and changes some parts of the castle. In the Alcaide’s palace, a manueline window can be found. The chimney in the main room and the portal with the royal coat of arms of the Noronha family is also from this time. The palace suffered great damages with the 1755 earthquake. During the 20th century it was found completely in ruins. It was restored in order to house the State Inn – the first state inn in a historic building.
Duration: 20 minutes
Stop At: Santuario do Senhor Jesus da Pedra, Largo Santuario, Obidos 2510-102 Portugal
Outside the walls of Óbidos, visit this incredible sanctuary, with its hexagonal shape and pyramidal green glazed roof. It was built between 1740-47, at the height of the Baroque period, but the details were never finished, which may be why some of the windows look oddly upside down. It is dedicated to Senhor da Pedra, and the pilgrimage dedicated to him takes place on 28th May. In the sanctuary square there is a delightful blue and white fountain, elegantly fashioned in the Baroque style.
Duration: 15 minutes
Stop At: Lagoa de Obidos, Obidos Portugal
The Óbidos Lagoon is the largest saltwater lagoon in Portugal with the lakes and waterways extending for 6 kilometers. The area offers stunning scenery combined with a very traditional and hospitable Portuguese atmosphere. The calm inland waters provide a sheltered environment for a variety of wildlife, which can be viewed from one of the scenic walks. The best beaches of the region are at the mouth of the Lagoon near the pretty town of Foz do Arelho.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Baleal Beach, Avenida da Praia, Peniche 2520-559 Portugal
Before visiting the town and its patrimony, enjoy the coast view. Watch the waves breaking against the rock cliffs forming sculptures that have taken on strange and dramatic shapes.
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Papoa, Peniche 2520-618 Portugal
The Papôa promontory, protruding on the left, brings to mind tragic shipwrecks, such as that of the “San Pedro de Alcantara”, a Spanish galleon wrecked in 1786 on its return voyage from Peru.
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Cabo Carvoeiro, Rua Ilha de Peniche, Peniche 2520-618 Portugal
Here stands the lighthouse, built in 1796. To the west lies the Nau dos Corvos, an impressive formation of rocks where seagulls and crows perch, and on the horizon you can see the Berlenga Islands, the only island nature reserve off mainland Portugal
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Fortaleza de Peniche, Portugal, Campo da Republica, Peniche 2520-607 Portugal
Built by decree of D. João III in 1557 and finished in 1645, it was considered the main marine entrance to the Portuguese Kingdom. Later it was turned into a political prison in the period of the “Estado Novo” (1933-1974) and was the scene of one of the most extraordinary escapes of the 20th century in Portugal when in 1960 a group of political prisoners broke free, among them Álvaro Cunhal, the communist leader.
