Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Nazaret, Praca Manuel Arriaga 20, Nazare 2450-160 Portugal
The municipality, and the parish was designated Pederneira until 1912, year in which, by law, the toponym was changed to Nazaré. The old municipality of Pederneira had a charter, in 1514, given by D. Manuel I, and was integrated into the Alcobaça areas.
Pederneira, currently one of the districts of the village of Nazaré, also maintains the building of the old Town Hall, the pillory, the Mother Church of Our Lady of the Sands and the church of the Misericordia, as testimony to its former condition as a county town .
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazareth located on the site.
The toponym Nazaré is intrinsically linked to the Legend of Our Lady of Nazareth.
Throughout the 20th century, Nazaré progressively evolved from a fishing village to a village dedicated to tourism, having been one of the first points of international tourist interest in Portugal. The tourism industry is today one of the main employers of the village.
A woman from Nazareth with the traditional seven skirts.
It is part of the Nazarene tradition the use of seven skirts by their women. The explanation is not consensual, but it is closely linked to the task: the Nazarenes had a habit of waiting for their husbands and sons, from the return of fishing, on the beach, sitting on the beach, spending hours there in their wake. They used the various skirts to cover themselves, the top ones to protect the head and shoulders of the sea and the others to cover the legs
Duration: 45 minutes
Stop At: Castelo de Obidos, Rua Direita Santa Maria, Obidos 2510-079 Portugal
The castle stands at an altitude of 79 meters above sea level, with an irregular rectangular (organic) shape, mixing elements of the Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline and Baroque styles, distributed in two main areas: the castelejo do Castelo, or Pousada de Óbidos) and the intra-muros district.
The perimeter of the walls, reinforced by towers of square and cylindrical plan, reaches 1,565 meters, totally crossed by an adarve defended by ameado parapeito. In some places, the walls are 13 meters high.
The eastern portion of the wall forms the nucleus of the broadest castle that surrounds the castle and the village, which, extending on both sides to the south for 500 meters, closes the perimeter at the tip, called the Facho Tower.
The access is made by four doors and two shutters, highlighting the Door of the Village or Door of Our Lady of Mercy, surmounted by an inscription, there placed by the king D.João IV (1640-1656), and that reads: A Our Lady was conceived without original sin. Inside there is a chapel with a balcony, covered with tiles from the 18th century.
Also noteworthy are:
The pillory of the village, erected in granite. It has on one side the shield with the royal arms, and on the other the cameraman of D. Leonor, which this queen donated to the village in memory of the net in which the fishermen brought her her dead son in a hunting accident. In the past, criminals and criminals were exposed and punished.
The aqueduct of the village, with a length of 3 km, joining Mount da Usseira and Óbidos. It was built by Queen D. Catherine of Austria, wife of King João III (1521-1557), carrying the water that supplied the fountains of Óbidos.
The Cruzeiro da Memória, built in commemoration of the capture of Óbidos to the Moors by D. Afonso Henriques, marks the place where he built camp before conquering the village.
