Stop At: Chiado, Lisbon Portugal
Take a cup of expresso, get familiar with day’s planning, understand how the Lisbon society was organized in the XIX century, understand the importance of literature in Portugal/Lisbon
We will meet here and start the day with a cup of coffee at the counter in a local coffee shop, but not one of those that the average joe goes to… but rather a very special place for Lisbon and the history of Portuguese literature: A Brazileira. Located in the heart of the XIX century’s society meeting place, this is the ideal location to start our tour. We will then head towards other historical commercial locations: casa Havaneza, A carioca, Casa Pereira, Barbearia Campos, Florista Pequeno Jardim, Paris em Lisboa and of course the historical bookstores Bertrand (the oldest operating bookstore in the World), Sá da Costa and Ferin.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Rua do Carmo, Lisbon Portugal
What we will do: Get familiar with the architecture of some historical buildings and stores.
In the old days, a store couldn’t exist without a physical location. For that reason, some of the oldest establishments in Lisbon tradionally put great emphasis on the looks of their products, employees, assortment and of course the store’s facade. During this part of the day, we will pay particular attention to the details of some buildings and stores’ architecture (Luvaria Ulisses, Galerias Granella, Joalharia do Carmo).
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Rua Augusta Satna Maria Maior, Lisbon Portugal
What we will do: Learn about the 1755 earthquake, visit the Flaming eagle statue in Rua Augusta, delve into the artery of the old commercial zone: Rua Augusta
You are now in the heart of the city, a district that’s more like a crossroad of public buildings, historical streets, banks, tourist atractions and above all…. A Cross road of every kind of people you can image. We will take this opportunity to show you around some of the local shops from back in the day that still stand today (Joalharia Ferreira Marques, Casa Macário and conserveira de Lisboa)… Also, you will be faced with a district that is the embodiment of the work of a man: Sebastião jose de carvalho e Melo, an enlighted character from the XVIII century with an iron will and a restless and impish personality.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Lisbon Baixa, Lisbon Portugal
What we will do: Eat and drink in one of the oldest restaurants in Lisbon
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: A Ginjinha, Largo de Sao Domingos 8 Rossio, Lisbon 1150-320 Portugal
What we will do: Have a dessert (cherry liquor) in one of the 3 oldest cherry liquor establishments in Lisbon. Visit the local Igreja de S.Domingos and one of the most exotic store in Lisbon (hospital bonecas).
It’s lunch and We are slowly leaning towards the end of the day so we will take it slowly from here on... Just a stroll in Lisbon’s 3 squares while pitstoping in some of the city’ most iconic sites such as the creepy and yet wonderful doll hospital, the 3 historic cherry liquour shops “Ginjinha do Rossio”, “Ginginha sem rival” & “Ginjinha Rubi” or the grocery shop “Manteigaria do Rossio” founded in 1890.
