About this activity
The adventure begins in Lisbon’s city center with a visit to the only Synagogue of Lisbon (Shaare Tikvá), first opened in 1948 as a cultural center. Afterwards, head to the site of the 1506 Jewish Massacre near the Church of São Domingos. The church is located in the Jewish Quarters in Alfama, the oldest neighborhood in the city. The name ‘Alfama’ comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning springs or baths, due to the natural springs found in the area.
During the Moorish invasion, Alfama was the center of Lisbon’s daily activities but over the centuries became a slum for poor fishermen. After wandering around Alfama, head to St. Jorge Castle for the best panoramic view of the city. Stop by Rossio Square, the place where the inquisition court was held and where thousands of Jews were forced to be baptized in the 15th century.
Stop for lunch, then head to UNESCO-listed Belém to see the famous Jerónimos Monastery. A masterpiece of the Manueline style, the monastery is a tribute to the king that welcomed and protected Jews fleeing from Spain, only to expel them in 1496. Then stop at the Monument to the Discoveries and learn about the Jewish men that participated actively in the exploration process. Throughout the tour, enjoy personalized attention from your private driver.

The tour guide was a pleasant felllow who knew Lisbon; but he did not know the Jewish Story. While he took us to a synagogue and the memorial to the victims of the Inquisition, he did not know about other synagogues or the history of the Jews in Portugal. We went to more churches than we would have liked and urged us to ascend the statute overlooking the city from the s=northern bank across from the museums. It was a nice view, but unrelateed to a Jewish tour. While we walked away with a good feel of the city and its history, we lacked any viable Jewish content.
