About this activity
Lace up your walking shoes and meet your friendly tour guide in Lisbon’s Chiado neighborhood. A shopper’s delight, the the commercial strips along Carmo and Garrett streets offer up a mix of long-established and modern stores. For your culture fix, stop into one of the artsy district’s myriad of museums and theaters.
Funky, colorful facades give way to elegant mansions and tree-lined boulevards in the neighboring Baixa area of central Lisbon. Keep an eye out for the Avenida da Liberdade’s noted tailoring shops on your way into one of the leafy avenue’s numerous cafes. Admire the elegant mansions dotting the post-1755 earthquake district, which Portugal included on its list of potential World Heritage Sites in 2004.
For a taste of old Portugal, you’ll continue over to Lisbon’s most ancient district, the Alfama, a former fishing village nestled in between the Tejo river and the medieval São Jorge Castle. The once royal residence now offers some of the most striking views of the city, as does the nearby Miradouro de Santa Luzia terrace, which overlooks Moorish ruins. Snap a few scrapbook-worthy pics, then settle into one of the neighborhood’s Fado bars and restaurants, where you can refuel and give your feet a well-earned rest, before ending the tour back at the original starting place.
