Ponte Vasco da Gama
We will begin our tour of Evora by crossing the longest bridge in Europe, Vasco da Gama Bridge. The bridge was built in 1998 and inaugurated during Lisbon’s World Fair (Expo 98), and in celebration of the 500th anniversary of Vasco da Gama’s voyage and discovery of the ocean route to India from Europe. On our way to Evora we will enjoy the unique landscape of the “Alentejo” province with its extensive cork tree forests and boundless vineyards (the largest wine region in Portugal).
Fabrica da Cortiça (Cork Factory)
Visit to one of the cork factories in the region of Evora, where you can watch and learn the cork making process, from its first to last stages of the final product. Here you can buy items at factory outlet prices.
Monsaraz (medieval village)
Magical medieval town near the border with Spain. Explore the shale stone streets and alleys and the medieval castle overlooking the largest man made lake in Europe: the Alqueva. Learn about the legacy of the Knights Templar and the Portuguese Jewish sefardists in this jewel of the historic towns of Portugal.
Cidade de Evora
Visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Evora, which is fortified by a 17th century medieval wall, tells us its history through the many monuments, squares and medieval streets we can find here. From the Roman Temple to the Moorish arcades in Giraldo Square and passing by the 12th century cathedral and the 17th century bone chapel “Capela dos Ossos”, we can reconstruct the past of this city once considered the barnyard of ancient Rome because of its many surrounding wheat fields. Evora was also one of the most important commercial cities during the Moorish rule and later became the capital of the Alentejo province after the Portuguese reconquest.
Wineries
Visit and optional wine tasting to one of these local wineries: “Adega da Cartuxa”, “Herdade do Esporão” or ” Adega Ervideira”.
Ponte 25 de Abril e Monumento do Cristo Rei
Inaugurated in 1966, the “25 de Abril” Bridge has become a major landmark of the city of Lisbon and a welcome site for all visitors. The bridge connects the two margins of the Tagus River and it is one of the most imposing suspended cable bridges in all the world.
The Christ the King Monument was inaugurated in 1959 and it’s a national sanctuary. It is a place of pilgrimage and welcomes thousands of Christians every year. Also, due to its privileged location, the overview is about two hundred meters above the water level of the river, the panoramic scenery is one of the most spectacular overlooking the city of Lisbon. This fact attracts millions of tourists annually.
