Klagenfurt for Christmas - day trip from Ljubljana

Historical buildings and squares, monuments, churches and amazing cathedrals, markets, galleries, museums.... all this and so much more is Klagenfurt. The Lindwurm, a winged dragon on Nuer Platz is the landmark of the city and was modelled on a legendary dragon, said to have resided in a swamp here long ago. During Christmas time Klagenfurt turns into a fairy-tale town with glittering lights, festive stalls with baked apples, mulled wine, roasted almonds and craft gifts.

Wörthersee lake is a popular tourist destination in summer and in winter. It is the biggest and the warmest lake in Austria surrounded by mountain peaks and lush greenery. The lake and its surroundings were shaped by glaciers during the last ice age and its deepest spot is 85 meters deep. During the summer is it a nice spot for swimming and other water activity. During winter and Christmas time Velden, the famous and vibrant village on the shores of lake is transformed into City of Angels. There are millions of sparkling lights, Christmas markets and floating Christmas trees on the lake.

Enjoy impressive wide-ranging views of Carinthia, unique landscape of lakes and summits of Karavanke and Hohe Tauern from an altitude of 905 m.The Pyramidenkogel was built in 2013 and with a total height of 100 m is the highest wooden viewing tower in the world. The ride to the top of the tower offers picturesque views of the surrounding lake valleys. If you prefer you can also climb 441 stairs to the top or go by panoramic lift. There are three viewing platforms and the highest platform is 71 meters high and it has a sheltered Sky Box. The best part of the tower is the 120 meters long slide from the top to the bottom of the tower and it takes only 20 seconds to come down the slide. It is for sure a very special experience and an adventurous ride. The slide is suitable for children and adults. Around the tower there is a restaurant, souvenir shop, playground for kids and during the Christmas time there are plenty of Christmas Markets.
