In the states Tony would have his own TV show- he’s personable, witty and has a wealth of knowledge that should be put in an available tour book.. not kidding, we all would buy it! Great Day- Do It!
What a wonderful day. The other guests were lovely. Tony was a knowledgeable and outstandingr host. This tour was my BD gift from me to me. Loved every minute.
That is about where I can leave this review. I loved the option of a small tour, which is why I went for this tour. Unfortunately, the tour guide just wasn't the best I've had. She would ramble and go off topic when trying to explain the itinerary for the day. Then there were no bathroom breaks or stops for water. The tour was rushed in the morning because the buses were running late, then we were forced to get to the castle quickly after a 90 min drive. Then requested to follow the tour guide for a tour of gardens, instead of allowing people to break for a drink or toilets before seeing the castle. At the village, we were forced to listen to ramblings of the town for 20 mins, no open facility to get drinks or use the toilet. The final stop at Coggs Manor, the tour guide made us follow her to a documentary for Downtown Abbey at the farm, but then complained about waiting for people to use the restroom before hand. Did not leave a good taste in my mouth.
Highclere Castle was definitely the star of this show. The brilliant building and gorgeously sprawling grounds were everything my fiancee and I expected and more. Tony made sure to heighten our expectations from Yew Tree Farm, To Bampton, to Downton Abbey itself. He really knew what he was talking about and provided lots of interesting new information for even the most ardent Downton Abbey fan. It would have great if any of the cast were inadvertently present to greet us. Hey, nothing wrong with wishful thinking.
Driver/guide Tony L. was very knowledgeable about the tv series, filming process, and locations as well as being skilful driving on very narrow roadways. Wonderful to visit Clogges Manor Farm, Brampton and Highclere Castle. Had 3 hours at Castle so not rushed. Lots to see there re: the beautiful castle, its estate and the museum re: Earl of Carnavons connection to discovery of King Tutankhamens burial chamber. Castles own guides very informative too.
This tour was absolutely fantastic. Our guide was wonderful and we went to filming locations as well as the castle. It was a perfect day in the beautiful English countryside.
This tour did not disappoint. Tony was an excellent guide and had lots of good information to share, and our driver, Daniel, was timely and efficient. I highly recommend a small group tour instead of a big bus tour to see Highclere Castle and the other sights. The crowds were relatively small the day of our tour so I really got to see everything I wanted to see without having to wait or stand in line.
A thoroughly enjoyable tour with a well-informed, experienced guide and driver who took us first through the Cotswolds, stopping at the farmhouse used in filming as well as the village of Bampton Downton Abbey village before getting to Highclere Castle. It was raining most of the day nevertheless, we had a very interesting tour of the house and grounds and time for tea. Having followed the Downton Abbey series, it felt like being at home. Highly recommended.
I had a wonderful time with a small group. Our guide was very informative and funny. The driver was most accomplished.
Our tour guide, Debra, really made the trip. She is full of life and very knowledgeable. If at all possible I advise the small group tour as you can go places the big bus can not get to.
We saw all the settings where filming was done, as well as the castle. Debbie, our tour director, was knowledgeable and was around when some of the filming was done. She is a delight, and Caroline, our driver, was competent and upbeat. This tour lasts about 12 hours, but the time flies. HIghly recommended.
