Parliament Square
Stop At: Houses of Parliament, Parliament Square, London SW1A 0AA England
Your tour begins when you enter the Palace of Westminster, and are greeted by the cavernous Westminster Hall, which has been hosting state functions and dignitaries from around the globe for for nearly 1,000 years and counting. Underneath the medieval hammerbeam roof, (made of 600 ancient oak trees) your local expert guide will introduce you and your small group of only 20 people to the Palace.
As you learn the history of the Palace, you’ll make your way through the building, stopping in the famous rooms like the Queen’s Robing Room, where the Queen puts on her crown before the State Opening of Parliament each year. You’ll also see the Division Lobbies where, according to a tradition that dates back to Ancient Rome, opposing sides gather before a parliamentary vote, the ‘Ayes’ in one room, the ‘Noes’ in another.
The stars of the show are the two engine rooms of British democracy: the Chamber of the House of Commons, and the Chamber of the House of Lords. You’ll actually get to step inside both while learning about the history and traditions that help keep the country running. Although the House of Commons is politically more important, the House of Lords will really knock your socks off. From the frescoes to the stained glass to the Royal Thrones, this is the most lavish room in the Palace.
Before you go, we have a special treat. On the Terraces of the Palace of Westminster overlooking the river, you’ll sit down for a scrumptious afternoon tea including cakes, scones, sandwiches, and petit fours. From here you’ll have stunning views up and down the river and get a great look at the outside of the Palace of Westminster.
